Mr Lee Kuan Yew,
Back in the 1990s Singapore's population then was just over 2.5m people, (partly because your of 'Stop at 2-child policy'). This number as your Government realized then, was far too inadequate to create a vibrant economic growth. A solution was sorely needed then, and you came out with the need for higher productivity from Singapore workers, to compete for business with neighbouring Asian countries which have larger pools of cheap labour market. That 'more productivity' policy as expected, was only marginally successful, as there was a limit to how productive a worker can be, so it failed to attract entrepreneurs to come to Singapore in droves. Your Government realized that it was fruitless to persist with that policy. A new way had to be found!
Instant cheap labour! That was your magic wand you stumbled upon! So Singapore began importing cheap labour incessantly from the neighbouring countries in large numbers, and it is still going on strongly until today. Unfortunately, LKY your Government was too engrossed with the 'PROS' of having cheap foreign labour, that you turned a blind eye on the 'CONS' of having mass influx of people into our tiny island. Not much thoughts were given to expand the infrastructures, amenities, and what have you to cope with the expanding population.
As Singapores population surges upwards from approximately 2.5m people to what is now more then 5m the situation starts to take its toll on the people. Supplies could not cope with the new overwhelming Demands. Consequently prices of everything in Singapore today from homes to peanuts began to surge skyward, most by more then 100%. However, the rise in salaries of most workers particularly those in the lower rung of society, pale in comparison to rise in cost of living.
The people who suffer the most are the newly married couples buying their first homes, and the elder citizens who need medical care. All these have been mentioned expansively in this space, so I do not wish to add more.
So LKY, it a WIN situation for the Government (Higher GDP), a WIN situation for the entrepreneurs who do business here (More Profits), A WIN situation for FTs (Good Income) and a LOSE situation for all Singaporeans (Higher cost of living).
LKY, you started the ball rolling! You are responsible for whats happening in Singapore today! So as a responsible leader, as you claimed yourself to be, you must take ownership and be accountable for the mess you created and NOW you MUST put things right before you go!
Thank you!
