Chee Soon Juan is Singapore's best-known dissident. In his decade-long struggle with the People's Action party (PAP), which has ruled the former British colony since independence in 1965, he has been jailed four times, fined, dismissed from his job as a university lecturer, sued by the country's "minister mentor" Lee Kuan Yew, bankrupted and barred from running in elections. The Singapore Democratic Party is contesting at the Sembawang GRC and Bukit Panjang SMC. Dr. Chee and his candidates have fought long and hard for attaining democracy. They've had to overcome all sorts of injustice, despite playing by the rules set by PAP. Dr. Chee is not an isolated point of view, all of us acknowledge the information he's spreading. The only difference is that, he's choosing to take the risk. He has dared to lose his life over what he truly believes would be best for all Singaporeans. Please, recognize and appreciate what the Singapore Democratic Party has done. Please vote SDP and let democracy prevail in Singapore!
Mr Chee, leader of the tiny opposition Singapore Democratic party, says the spectacular economic progress for which Singapore is famous is no longer enough. He wants a more open, inclusive and democratic political system in the city state. He is backed by human rights groups.
Mr Chee was briefly jailed again last month for contempt of court after he accused the judiciary of pro-government bias. "This is only the beginning, we're going to carry on fighting," he vowed on his release. Standing outside the rusty barbed wire fences of Queenstown remand prison on a Friday morning with his wife and children at his side, he added: "We are going to do whatever we can to bring democracy to Singapore."Veteran opposition leader JB Jeyaretnam, formerly of the Workers party, said reform was long overdue. "The whole system is a shambles. The government is a law unto itself in many cases ... From the beginning, parliament has been kept as a sort of rubber stamp for the PAP. I call this a castrated society."
But opposition parties, which hold two of parliament's 84 elected seats, face an all but impossible task in polls expected by the end of June. Government critics cite budget giveaways, cowed media, PAP threats to withhold state funding from opposition constituencies, mandatory voting, and what some Singaporeans call the "fear factor" as evidence that the system is stacked against them.
"People are frightened to get involved as candidates or even to help the opposition. There is a very real fear of what the PAP can do," Mr Jeyaretnam said. Repercussions ranged from dismissing people from their jobs to throwing them in jail. Like Mr Chee, he was bankrupted after defamation suits brought by the prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Kuan Yew's son, among others.
Officials make no apology for Singapore's top-down way of doing things. Mr Chee and others were free to oppose policies provided they followed the rules, second solicitor-general Lee Seiu Kin said after the contempt hearing. "If he [Chee] deliberately and flagrantly breaks the law, whether by uttering extremely defamatory words or flouting the criminal law - or in this case, making grave accusations against not just a judge but the entire judiciary - then he must know the law must be enforced," he said.
All the same, Singapore's leaders acknowledge times are changing. Its "economic miracle" is under threat as competition mounts from larger neighbours, as well as the region's emerging superpowers. They admit if the PAP cannot guarantee sustained prosperity, pressure for political reform may increase.
As China's wealth and power grows, Singapore (whose 4.2 million people are 75% ethnic Chinese) is beginning to resemble a pilot for a far bigger project. Officials say the government is intent on opening up the political system. But, like China, they insist it must balance demands for greater freedom against the "existential" need to maintain security and economic growth. And Singapore was not going to have one-size-fits-all western values foisted upon it - whatever people like Mr Chee might say.
"I hope we are improving by our standards. Whether we are improving by your standards or American standards is a different question," said the foreign minister, George Yeo. "Our responsibility is to Singaporeans, and what we do here should meet their approval. There are no universal prescriptions."
All the best Rebel boy's sister for tomorrow, you deserve cheers and votes for your courage!
ReplyDeleteDr Chee should learn from Chiam or Low to avoid further libel suit as it not worth to defend himself in S'pore Judical Commission Court.
ReplyDeleteAs S'porean, we only can sympathy & wish him to be more brillant in future campaign. Get elected first b4 you voice anything that is easily claim by PAP for defame..
Sorry, but he's the one opposition candidate I will not support.
ReplyDeleteChee was supposed to be the one to lead Opposition politics into the future, but he ended up taking them back. Not to mention he also nearly ended the political career of his mentor Chiam.
Sorry, but he's the one opposition candidate I will not support.
ReplyDeleteAre you then, saying that you would rather vote for the PAP in the Sembawang GRC?
No body can deny that it was Dr. Chee who paved the way for a strong opposition front, and if the SDP doesn't win, it would be gravely disappointing.
Get elected first b4 you voice anything that is easily claim by PAP for defame..
Who are you kidding? Anyone (elected or otherwise) would be immediately sued by the PAP if they choose to directly criticise them! Anyway, what's the point of running for election if you're not going to put forward your political agendas? Dr. Chee and the SDP have come out passionate and strong in their election rallies. They've voiced their opposition, and I do believe that these resonate with the electorates.
Please be aware that Dr. Chee has been unfairly portrayed as a hooligan as a consequence of PAP dirty tactics. A loss for SDP is a win for PAP!
Please support Dr. Chee and his candidates!
I for one have support Dr Chee's message and respect him for daring to stand up for his beliefs (even if some of nismethods are not exactly politically savvy or connect with the public). Shamefully, I am a coward who opposes the PAP silently and anonymously. But Dr Chee understands that this is a personal choice we all must make.
ReplyDeleteI heard his sister read out an email from him at the recent rally. Can anyone direct me to its contents? Thanks.
Anon: "Chee was supposed to be the one to lead Opposition politics into the future, but he ended up taking them back."
ReplyDeleteFirst you have been brainwashed by the 140th. Second, Chee opened the way for the other oppositions. He is like a pathfinder who fearlessly scarificed himself by testing the water. The others like SDA and WP simply followed. Chee is a hero!

ReplyDeleteNot politically savvy? I'm challenging you to come up something better especially in a country like Singapore where even the slightest hint of dissent gets hit with libel suits! I'm challenging you to throw your life, family and career away just so you can take one aim at PAP's authoritative rule! C'mon, go on..?
Just so I thought.
We're in no position to criticize Dr. Chee's methods. He got his point across, he changed the fabric of our society only for the better, he raised awareness of such issues as NKF, etc.. at a period of time when none of us could have the audacity to think of such actions! This is the work of self-lessness. This is the work of a caring, dedicated, determined individual! Think of a single PAP member who can rival these characteristics? No!
VOTE FOR SDP!!
The last thing you want to do in Sembawang GRC, is to elect a corrupt health minister from MALAYSIA!
ReplyDeleteHere's what he had to say:

If you have seen the "Singapore Rebel", you would have heard CSJ's account of what happened in the incident regarding tax payers' money during the previous election. According to CSJ, this is what happened...
ReplyDeleteCSJ was in the hawker centre with the SDP canvassing for the election when they bumped into GCT and his PAP lackeys. The PAP started chanting slogans loudly, drowning out CSJ and his party. CSJ being outnumbered and wanting to be heard shouted to GCT, "Where is the money!", refering the tax payers' money sent to the then President Suharto of Indonesia. GCT then pointed to his own pocket!
This was something the local media never dared to report. The PAP government then went on to ban the movie from being screened in Singapore on the basis of political content. This begs the question, if CSJ was lying, wouldn't this have resulted in the usual defamation suit?
I used to view CSJ as a rabid dog, my views shaped in part by the media potrayal and labelling of him by the PAP MPs as a "political gangster". I am not so sure now.
this is a v serious allegation. are you v sure? im shocked!
