Listening to Low Thia Khiang's speech at the AMK rally literally moved me to tears. I have always been patriotic, until the age of 16 I never missed a single NDP and I would cry if for some reason I couldn't watch it live. I would record it on tape and watch it again and again. Lee Kuan Yew was my hero. I used to think 'this great man has done so much for Singapore.' My heart swelled with pride whenever I saw them play his life-story on the big screen during NDP, his communist fighting days and independence from Malaysia, etc.
However, as I grew older, I became disillusioned. The turning point for me was the Cheng San incident in 1997. I was shocked that my 'hero' could stoop so low, to attack Tang Liang Hong and Jeyaretnam, and twist the law in their own favour. With my newfound curiosity, I started researching on my own, including reading books like 'To Catch a Tartar' by Francis Seow, and 'The Hatchet Man of Singapore' by JBJ. I have an autographed copy of the book, signed by JBJ himself, on his 79th birthday no less. I will always remember buying it from him outside the SIR building at Lavender. He was so humble and obliging when I asked for his autograph.
I was incredibly moved when I heard Mr Low's speech. I truly admire the courage of the Ang Mo Kio 'Suicide Six' and I hope they won't lose their deposits. I feared the worst, but when I saw the pictures of the Ang Mo Kio rally, I now am certain that they won't lose their deposits. For six young first-timers, challenging the Prime Minister with all his heavy machinery, is no small task. They come across as very human, and I think they themselves have felt daunted at times.
But Mr Low said 'daring to die (gan2 si3) is much better than being afraid to die (pa4 si3).' This captured my sentiments exactly.
For too long, Singaporeans have been afraid to stand up for what they believe in. This is typified by the "all talk, no action", risk-averse mindset. All my Singaporean friends are concerned only with their own self interest, their own careers and their own social life. No one cares about their community, society or the nation. When I started my own business some years ago at the age of 21, people sneered at me and laughed. They said I should go and study hard and try to get a government job. That's why Glenda's story is truly an inspiration for me. She was 22 when she started her own business.
Something dawned upon me at 2 am in the morning, as I listened to Mr Low's speech on my headphones. I learnt that COURAGE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF FEAR. IT IS THE WILL TO ACT IN SPITE OF IT.
The 'Suicide Six' and the whole WP team has shown immense courage, they are a true inspiration to Singaporeans, far more so than the gutless, faceless, anonymous PAP MPs who 'walkover' into Parliament hiding behind the shadows of their anchor Ministers. What's more, all these people had to be PERSUADED to join politics. They had to be invited to tea. And they miss Parliamentary sittings, they miss meet-the-people sessions.
Where is the justice when people like that get to represent us, whereas courageous, lion-hearted, passionate people like the "Suicide Six" and Steve Chia (who pledged FOUR MONTHS of his MP allowance to CCK, swore to move house to CCK if elected, and also GAVE OUT HIS HANDPHONE NUMBER during a rally) are derided as 'troublemakers' and their contributions mocked and scorned?
These 9 days have been life-changing for me.
I think we all know what the results will be tomorrow. In all honesty, I'd like to optimistic, but I truly think the PAP will sweep 83 out of 84 seats. Only Mr Low will be re-elected (with a large majority), with Sylvia and Chiam as NCMPs. But the PAP has been rocked. Their percentage of votes will drop from 75% to 65%, which is a huge decrease. The seeds of democracy have been sown, and in 2011 I am sure the winds of change will blow. Singapore needs people like this to revitalise the nation. I hope that they don't give up, and continue to fight for people like you and me.
I'd also like to thank those of you who courageously took videos and audio clips of the rallies. Without you, people like me (I'm in the UK) will never have gotten a chance to know what REALLY transpired on the ground, with CNA's biased reporting and all.
I would just like to appeal to my fellow Singaporeans, not to let these brave people down. Show a bit of courage yourselves, overcome your fears, and vote WP this election. Every vote counts, because every vote for the WP makes a two-vote difference (1 more for WP, 1 less for PAP). They will read out your NRIC number and your name. They will print serial numbers on the ballot paper. But please, don't let these brave people down and show a bit of courage yourselves.
That is the ONLY way forward for Singapore.
Check out the First Class education system. This is how they propose to teach children...by insulting and demeaning them...see how she questions his integrity for an assignment he didnt hand in.

same feelings here.
ReplyDeleteThe fallout will surely come after the elections. LHL can do two things. One, he could do the right thing by pushing for political reform and openness, something he himself promised 2 yrs ago, and lead s'pore towards the future. Two, he could do what his daddy does best, tighten up in fear and we all know what fear can leads to... anger, hatred. Whatever the results of this GE, the next 5 yrs would be critical. Many s'poreans are watching and if the political signs remain the same they will bolt and leave for good as s'pore sinks deeper into shadows and illusions of the past.
ReplyDeleteI wish and i hope, but i'm afraid he will choose the second option.
The classroom video is quite bad. I had to get to university to escape teachers like that. What's wrong with not conforming anyway?
ReplyDeleteDonoghue's right. We must start changing our perceptions of and our attitudes towards the Opposition and oppositional politics. They are not pariahs. We have to remove the social stigma which comes with opposing the PAP.
When we have accomplished that, we will see better qualified and more politically savvy candidates coming in to the opposition.
But for now, the AMK Six will do nicely.

ReplyDeletearen't the voting secret so why should the voters be afraid who to vote for, even for the opposition? Unless there's some conspiracy theory that i'm still in the dark for so many years. if so, pleae enlighten me. thanks

ReplyDeleteVoters, please vote wisely.
Sylvia, Gomez and team, my 3 family votes are yours in Aljunied!!!
ReplyDeleteNow PAP need 4 yesmen to cancel us out!

Do you know why so many singaporean like to stay overseas? Because they dislike the PAP and fear them.
ReplyDeleteMany PR left Singapore because they don't like the PAP system.
Ask your friends, relatives ,colleages etc. in contesting wards to vote for Oppositions through using telephones, handphones, internet,or words of mouth as wide spread as possible. This is the only chance to get your voice heard loud and clear in the Parliament.Otherwise , your life in the next 5 years will be miserable and unbearable.
ReplyDeleteyes. please vote for the opposition. come on. its not as if the PAP will not be the government. they will still return to power. question is HOW MUCH POWER u want to give them. we have 2 bonafide opposition now and one NCMP the PAP are climbing all over the people. 3 is not enough. we need MORE. Aljunied GRC alone will add 5!!! COME ON ALJUNIED FRIENDS!!! please pass the message. they want to block the media its ok. we use people campaign. last time great wars were won over this kind of message spreading.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, Chiam See Tong's not going to survive this election, not with the hammering he's getting. Aljunied will still end up with PAP, and Hougang will be the only ward in opposition camp. As for the rally turn out, it's just the Singapore way: vent your frustrations when no one knows it's you; but when it comes to voting, still go for PAP in case they know who you are.
ReplyDeleteThen, after the elation, people will just get bitter and accept the reality that opposition politics get you nowhere. Opposition politics loose steam, and we end up with PAP for god knows how long.
Anyway, first fallout from this elections could probably be the internet. Anyone fancy us going the way of China? ;)
I could be a Lee Hsien Loong or a Chee Soon Juan easily, very easily.
ReplyDeleteI was a successful end-result of the PAP-led education system and enjoy a good life with good academic certifications, but I did not really fit into the "guai guai ting hua" type when I was in Dunman High School (aka Chinese Military style school) with double first language in English and Mandarin.
I was often singled out as the troublemaker by the discipline master, and I take sympathy with CSJ in this aspect. All I wanted was, some fun and equality for my individualism rights (I was growing up and testing my grounds and limits), and I was blatantly shot down.
Please visualise this: on one occasion, I wore a decorated baseball cap during a annual cross-country run at MacRitchie and the discipline master asked the school photographer to take a photo of me, to be proof. Reminds you of similar tactics by someone?
Well, luckily I survived all that.
I sincerely support policitcal reform in Singapore, or in layman terms, I ask that there be more parties in Parliament, good ones, even hilarious ones like CSJ (kudos to the SPH media for their "clownisation"). I also ask that the ruling party be checked and audited for all monetary matters and Temasek Holdings and all GLCs be checked and balanced. We cannot allow a single dominant party to control the people's wealth.
Yes we should be grateful to become a First World economy. But that does not and should not translate into signing away my life savings (aka CPF) or our children's future (aka Singapore Island) to a dominant party, controlled by a few individuals.
Life on the island should also be more free, with freedom to speak against any politicians, and policies with no fear of being sued til bankruptcy. I like my chewing gum and beg that such infant nannying be stopped at once!
Blessed by God, now I work and live in Switzerland (easy to track down who I am) and I give out my real name in ST Forum and so on. Singapore is NOT Switzerland, not even close by a huge margin.
The basic living principle in Swiss culture is respect. Respect for individual privacy and respect for Swissness (patriotism). Respect also for diversity and respect for less-fortunate people and a keenness to help them out.
Is Singapore any of this? Any likeness at ALL?
There are poor people in Switzerland also, but there is a safety net, with which not many Swiss will like to accept unless in real hot cases. Every one wants to work and contribute to the economy. They are a matured population, working for the good of their society (really).
Now lets compare that to Singapore, NanYang, a port for opportunities.
Singapore is more like a hungry New York stock broker company. Money is the only motivation. Just ask the MPs for the salary slips. It is openly accepted it is ok to pay this much in order to get this "public service" from highly capable people.
I do suggest that LHL or GCT donate 50% of their salaries to NKF (or is that forbidden now?), or maybe it is peanuts?
Looking at the WP rally sizes and the meagre turnouts for PAP, I am very pleased. Very very happy. I am hoping and praying that more than 2 seats will be voted for the Opposition parties (no matter which one).
This will wake up the sleeping dragon (Sian Loong).
Goh CT also made some sensible comments at Hougang. No one should be left behind, we are Singaporeans, not just party voters.
The mindless and often arrogant direct words of Lee Sian Loong, came across to me, as being direct. He is directly telling us his mind, which is good and clear. We cannot give this man full authority. If I put Phua Chu Kang, as LKY's son, I believe PCK can also boast of "judge me with what I have done". A CEO of a company often takes credit for the work the ka-kia (employees) have done. All they do , is show up and sign the papers.
Singapore, wake up! It is time for a change.
The WP and the SDA and the other Opp parties need your vote. In fact, you need THEM!
We can no longer tolerate the antics of the ruling party, to rule us like coolies.
They run down the opposition with child games (Gomez saga), unfair media coverage (ST online deleted LHL words), police taking videos, etc etc.
Can we continue to live life on the small island like this?
I pray that Singaporeans will be strong and be wise in their vote. If you want to continue living under a blanket, thinking that the ruling party will take care of all things for you, then I wish you good luck. There is no free lunch.
But there can be fairness in asking hard questions in Parliament. Will a PAP MP date talk back to LHL? You decide.
Mr.T
Switzerland
As expected, I was technically not qualified to vote.
I will definately support PAP, they have doe very well for Singapore and we can see the results. No way i will risk voting for opposition party and risk ruining SG and my life. You will not know what they might do to Singapore from the uncultured way they talk in front of the media.
ReplyDeleteI think we should spread this..

Those who havent watch this video clip, you'll be amazed. :D
To another anonymous,
ReplyDeletedo you happen to mean the way when they talk about "fix(ing) the opposition"?
shame n u guys who support the oppositions. Singapore goverment is doing a very good job and that includes giving u guys GOOD and first class education which surpass malaysia and indonesia. But u have used it back on the PAP and supports the oppostitions. Try handing SG to them and see what our future will be? Our future kids will suffer to no end with an uncultured goverment!
ReplyDeleteTo the same anonymous,
ReplyDeleteare u looking forward to your lift upgrading too?

ReplyDeleteall the way man! it's correct to say courage is not the absence of fear. it is rather the determination to wanna fight on, to achieve total victory!
ReplyDeletethis is what i have all along learnt in my life, and in my organisation. i will always cherish this thought. :)
No doubt that the goverment did well for the past 5 years in terms of security
ReplyDeleteNo doubt that the goverment has done well in the education system
No doubt the goverment has done well in improving our standard of living
No doubt the goverment has done well in terms of handling the Sars outbreak
Yes i trust the current goverment in doing all this but i can;t trust the goverment on how they handle the poor/needy...
My mum used to earn $700 5 years ago and is still earning the same...
What esle can i say? while my mum salary didn;t increase, the prime minister took home 162k per month
More over the full time MP took home 100k and part time MP took home 13k... WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?
Progress package? Nah i believe that is only 10% of the amount the goverment has earn from our CPF...
Life upgrade? i can accused them of planning this since day 1 when they decided not to build lift for every stroey
And what the fuck is the SM and MM doing? shouldn;t they retired?
Do we see a SM or MM in other country?
Since both of them step down, shouldn't they don't involve in the goverment again? and are they paid? 200k per month? maybe who knows
Anyway i urge people who read this to vote the oppositon..
No doubt, the opposition might not improve my mum salary but at least the GST/Taxes/Transport will not increase ...
So Vote wisly singaporean...
Singaporeans need to be very careful in voicing out their opinion or else suffer the consequences. Yes. Your vote is SECRET just like your password ONLY you and ofcourse the IT Administrator.
ReplyDeleteQuoting: I will definately support PAP, they have doe very well for Singapore and we can see the results. No way i will risk voting for opposition party and risk ruining SG and my life. ReplyDeleteDo you think by voting for the opposition means handing them over the reins of Singapore? PAP still has majority of the seats, they are not going anywhere. What voting for the Opposition does is to tell our government that we have the rights and the power to voice out. Be it education, censorship, lift upgrading, petrol prices too high, health care, bad government investments, how much tax the ministers pay, etc. Don't you ever want answers to any questions? Or you want to be just like a sheep?
There are some MPs who can't speak properly. Most importantly, you want someone who speaks the Truth.
Quoting: shame n u guys who support the oppositions. Singapore goverment is doing a very good job and that includes giving u guys GOOD and first class education which surpass malaysia and indonesia. ReplyDeleteDoes everyone in SG get a good and first class education? How do you even know how the opposition would do? Like I said, voting for them does NOT mean handing the reins over. Cultured government suing over a minor "he said, she said" every time there is an election. I wonder why the "uncultured" opposition doesn't do the same.
Voting in Singapore is not Secret. It seems that they know who vote for which party.
ReplyDeleteProbably use that as a statistic to choose the GRC.
Counting is fair too? We would never know too.
Voting is not exactly secret apparently... i quote from the following website:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.elections.gov.sg/secrecy.htm
"Theoretically, it is possible for anyone with access to the ballot papers to identify who cast a particular vote. The link between the ballot paper number and the electoral register through the counterfoil does facilitate tracing from a ballot paper to a voter's identity on the register."
i rest my case.
anonymous said..."Singapore goverment is doing a very good job and that includes giving u guys GOOD and first class education which surpass malaysia and indonesia."
ReplyDeleteA good and first class education if you can afford it. The irony is that the best scholarships often end up going to those whose families can most afford it.
anonymous said... "You will not know what they might do to Singapore from the uncultured way they talk in front of the media. "
ReplyDeleteHave you seen how Sylvia Lim speaks? I don't see how she's uncultured, especially when the way PAP is treating Chiam See Tong -- widely accepted as a gentleman politican -- this election is nothing short of shameless.
Support the PAP for all you want, if it's a winner that you want. I was a PAP supporter myself, until I lost pride in them.
vote for the opposition! hv the same feelings as the writer, admire LKY and stuff but as time passes by and i grew older...i changed my opinion..WP SDA is ur choice..dun waste ur vote!
ReplyDeleteHmm..a friend's of mine was a civil servant and helped out at the polling before. He said it's really secret and tamper proof. However, since certain districts go to a certain polling station, then maybe they get statistics from there as a WHOLE, in order to decide the districts..not the individual.. Cmon.. so many pple vote for the opposition..
ReplyDeleteall the best to opposition
ReplyDeletemy mum once told me good things abt GCT and i always tot he is a nice guy. Until I did my undergraduate, initial views started to change.
ReplyDeleteAnd until recently, i've the chance to vote and has been rather involved in the news about this GE, then I've seen personally myself wat this whole GE is about and wat sort of tactics the PAP is using..
Guess wat? its about the battle of the rich and poor. The rich is on a higher grounds.. they exploit money.. they 'buy' and they 'fix'. Why must we succumb to such low tactic? if they have been fairer, my views wouldnt have changed.
Thus, i dun select the opposition but rather i deselect the PAP. However, i do agree tat competition keeps some self-interested people in check. Competition keeps prices low. SO STOP THIS MONOPOLY!
to the person who slammed whe opposition supporters abt the world class education system PAP has provided...
ReplyDeletelet me ask u 1 question,
what is your purpose of studying?
Ans: get a well paying job in the future
what is happening now?
ans: yr well paying jobs are being taken by the foreign talents who offer to take less!
what good is yr 1st world education when it cant even get u a job!
gosh. are we really going to give it to the opposition just because we need a NEW VOICE? just because the MP takes home 13k a month and you only receive a measly 1k perhaps?
ReplyDeleteno one has yet mentioned the true abilities of the opposition, but rather take it as a form of courage, to fight for our rights.
the money is ours to make, its just a matter of whether you wanna seize the chance and prove your capabilities. the future is ours to mould, no doubt the tried and tested formula's somethings cock up.rake up NKF rake up flats purposely built with lifts not stopping at every floor for all you want. but singaporeans, arent we all ashamed that while people in other countries worry abt their countrie's future, about the govt's ability to deal with issues ( both internal and external), about having foresight, we are struggling with bread n butter issues here?
the vote is yours to make. dont just give it to the opposition just because of incidents such as those, think big.
to the anonymous who have posted at 12.12AM SGT:
ReplyDeletei say: "Please look at Hougang! FREE LIFT UPGRADINGS"
Workers' Party has done it, why can't PAP?
mind you, Workers' Party's resources ain't comparable with PAP's...
PAP boasts of huge reserves, and yet still want people to co-pay the upgrading costs...
Workers' Party's reserves are a fraction of what PAP can offer, and yet capable of providing FREE LIFT UPGRADING for Hougang.
THIS ARE THE ABILITIES SHOWN BY THE WORKERS' PARTY.
we let voters decide. =)
The common thread underlying all the PAP supporters here seems to be "support the PAP because they have brought economic success". I think this is precisly the type of materialistic, selfish and narrowly minded thinking that is being nurtured and exploited by the PAP all these years. From a very young age, we have been bombarded and brainwashed to think that life in Sin is all about excelling in school, get a government scholarship, get a good job, buy HDB flats, and work hard for the rest of your life to pay off your loans. In this way, you contribute to the economic success of Sin so that everyone can survive. THIS IS THE LIFE PRESCRIBED BY THE PAP. And I dare say many people in Singapore, esp the PAP supporters, fall into this fallacy of the PAP defined life. ANything else that strays from this path is deemed as failure.
ReplyDeleteI do not blame the PAP supporters, they have been conditioned all their life into believing that the PAP has created this wonderful life for them and so long as they vote for the PAP, their good life will continue.
I pity them. For success in life should never be measured by the degree you have, the scholarship you received, the money you make, the house you own, the car you drive, rather, it is the little things that defined a great life, being kind to the people around you, spending time with your family, enjoying your work, helping the needy.
I think we are seeing a challenge to the PAP defined life, people are asking for greater freedom of expression, more accomodating of alternative types of successes, active participation in policy making, etc. If the PAP does not change it's outdated line of rule, we need the opposition to effect such changes. Because the voters are the true bosses of the PAP, and not the other way round.
"gosh. are we really going to give it to the opposition just because we need a NEW VOICE? just because the MP takes home 13k a month and you only receive a measly 1k perhaps?"
ReplyDeleteA group of pigs feasting on the delicious cuisine brought to them by the monkeys.
Some of the the pigs were thinking: Oh we better eat fast, so that we won't loose out.
Some others were thinking: we better behave well and get into the good books of teh monkeys so that they'll bring us more good food. Yummie.
Some of them were even thinking: We better work harder to impress the monkeys so that they will bring us good food continuously.
And the monkeys were smiling away: So the last pig we sold bought us quite a fare bit of PEANUTS and BANANAS and of course these garbages that the PIGS are feasting on. He He He. Eat some more and grow fatter. We'll have more PEANUTS and BANANAS anyway.
The quote doesn't imply anything much.Even it is possible to trace, how much can the garmen do to the voter if he/she votes for opposition? If action were to be taken against/on that opposition voter, then might as well the garmen don't need to ask for election; 'serving no purpose for election' if action taken by garmen were to be revealed. Therefore, tracing doesn't have much negative impacts on voters.
ReplyDeleteCome on, don't be scared...we are all born in this world to have liberty and freedom. "Dare dare come lah!" Think of our life in future and for our next generation! Speak out for ourselves in our ballot.

Thanks for the blogs, I am able to read about the WP 'Sucide Six'. I am in Brisbane, Australia and Singapore is always my home. I leave Singapore to go after my dream. After more than 10 years in Australia and watching the Aussie political change since 1995, Singapore PAP government is far from being First Class.
ReplyDeleteI am very impressed by WP candidates. I suggest oversea Singaporeans to contact WP and assist them with fund raising. I also believe that oversea Singaporeans have seen enough of the world to make a difference in today's Singapore and boldly suggest that oversea Singaporeans should look into going back to Singapore if WP win a GRC. Today's Singapore need a passion opposition to fight for the basic right: to make a choice!
Singapore education is not First Class! Why most (or all) government top scholars are educated oversea? Chinese language in Singapore follows the China's simplify chinese, ask yourself why simplify chinese? Is it really easier? For primary one students, how many can differential 'pen' in pinyin to english. English is learn thru phonics. Chinese is a pictorial, very visual. 'Water' in chinese is derived from the drawing of the flow create by water. If we are to learn chinese with Sima Qian's Shiji (Historical Record), we will be very different in thoughts. Shiji is 'wisdom of the ages' based on actual events. The use of Shiji's proverbs is view as an expression of thoughts. These thoughts can increase the depth of our wisdom and I believe is view by Singapore PAP as dangerous. Ask Mr Low as he is chinese-ed. Shiji allows me to think in depth of any situation. I am not saying Singapore should follow china blindly. Muslims in Singapore are still learning Arab, why we chinese have to forget our own chinese history. Chinese History is colourful and interesting. The rise and fall of every dynasty is due to over taxing of the people to support an expensive bureaucracy and revolt happen.

That PAP has done a good job in infrastructural building and basic social cohesion is undeniable. And it is with such foundation that our nation can evolve to the next level: Political vibrancy.
ReplyDeleteMany have cited other countries' failures in democracy, but they have overlooked the point that these countries did not have the foundation that Singapore has.
Therefore, hesitate no more. If you are pro-singapore, if you are truly concerned about its future, your future, your offsprings' future, vote in the opposition. The time is now to inculcate and grow an alternative voice, so that in time to come, the political climate will mature to the point that opposition parties and PAP will be able to put aside their differences and cooperate for the benefit of the people, you.
