The Star
ANALYSIS BY JOCELINE TAN
THE contest in Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Ang Mo Kio constituency has been likened to “an egg going against a rock”, meaning the opposition party is likely to be crushed.
It has been an uphill campaign for the Worker’s Party team which is taking on Lee’s PAP team in the group representation seat in Singapore’s May 6 general election.
The seat is being contested for the first time in 18 years.
Constituents smile when asked about the campaign, saying there is little to discuss and implying they have decided who they want.
In denying Lee his usual walkover win, the Worker’s Party said that they were fighting Lee so that he would not be a “walkover PM”.
Lee, who was not without a sense of humour, replied that PAP was grateful for the Worker’s Party doing “national service”.
When asked whether he thought the opposition would lose its deposit in Ang Mo Kio, Lee said with a laugh: “We’ll try our best to make sure it’ll cost them some money.”
Despite the assured victory, the prime minister’s team of six, which includes Malaysian-born engineer Lee Bee Wah, has not taken it easy.
They still hit the pavements, go door-to-door and make the rounds at markets and hawker centres.
Now that the campaign has crossed the half-way point, the pace has quickened and the pressure on the opposition even hotter than ever.
On Tuesday night, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew joined the rally circuit for the first time in the campaign.
He turned up at a rally to help an “old friend” from the 1960s, Ong Ah Heng, who is fighting to keep his Nee Soon Central seat. But it was obviously more than just for old times’ sake or friendship.
It was also a strategic stage appearance which the elder statesman used to attack the Worker’s Party, calling its leaders a string of unsavoury names and challenging them to sue him.
At 82, the senior Lee is still an electrifying speaker and he did it in his trademark style, emphasising each accusation with karate chops in the air and lots of finger pointing.
The Worker’s Party, which has emerged as the most prominent among the motley opposition parties, has emerged as the PAP’s chief target of attack.
The PAP may resemble a rock but the Worker’s Party seems to be a tough egg to crack.
The attacks have focused on what has become known as the James Gomez saga.
It began with Worker’s Party candidate Gomez saying he had submitted some forms required for his candidature when he had not.
But cameras at the Elections Department office caught him filling up, then putting the forms into his briefcase.
His party called it an honest mistake, the PAP accused him of dishonesty and the whole thing has been blown up to such an extent that it has eclipsed other election issues.
The PAP has used the Gomez saga to question the integrity of the Worker’s Party.
The Worker’s Party accused the PAP of making a mountain out of a molehill on the issue.
“The PAP tactic does not reflect a first world government. It is the start of third world gutter politics,” Gomez said at a rally.
Analysts said the Gomez issue was unlikely to influence the way people vote.
“There have usually been about 30% of people who will support the opposition with another 5% to 10% of swing votes depending on the issues. If there is a vote swing, it will be within these margins,” said an analyst.
Lunch hour rallies also made a comeback this year and Lee who is seeking a mandate for his leadership was the crowd drawer in the central business district yesterday. His speech touched on Singapore’s future and sense of self.
83 yrs old fool used words like liar , sue me ... clearly show he is mad ... like hitler in the bunker during the last few days before russian over run berlin !!!
ReplyDeleteMF lee , ur days are numbered
PM lee said the more clever u are , the more dangerous u are, why is he talk so badly about his father ???
ReplyDeletei recently heard of TV channel 8 , a PAP member said opposition is like terrorists , going around at night to hang posters...
It's time LKY step down and stop embarassing Singapore. He did a fantastic job of bringing Singapore to where it is today at the expense of freedom of speech, political freedom, freedom to express alternative views - in short, our freedom. For Singapore to develop and grow into a mature nation, we need our freedom - the freedom to discuss policies, offer opposing views, and dabate issues.
ReplyDeleteI think the old man is getting out of hand. He is making all singaporeans looks like fools.
ReplyDeleteAs for PM Lee, i dun think u will hv it easy in AMK...i will vote for opposition...so will lots of other AMK residents.
i refer to 12:25 PM SGT from Anonymous. That guy looks certainly stuck up. Young punk he should not be making this kind of comments. That show how arrogant PAP candidates. I certainly don't want that guy to be in my ward.
ReplyDeleteAfter so many years in power, I think they should be more humble. I think it is not that people do not want to challenge him for 18 years... it is because he is unbeatable? Probably not! Which tyrant is unbeatable? I believed that it is because many in Singapore still want to give at least some respect to LKY for his role in the building of Singapore.
ReplyDeleteWhen he is gone, will things change?
Absolutely, I believed so... just look at all Chinese dynastry history is a good prediction of what is likely going to happen. That is the reason why he still has to stay on as MM. But this M&M chocolate has to melt one day. He cannot live forever.
What he should do is to build a creditable opposition instead of using gutter political tactics to gun everyone that is against PAP down. If he does not trust the opposition, split the PAP then. Only then you will see the real competition, the real characters surfacing, who is really for the country and for serving the people, or those who moves into politics is like a career move into the upper power sector class in Singapore.
Is there a need to sue everyone or make some instigating remarks and statements to get your opponents to sue you? Surely not by calling your opponents names all the time will make you a first world PM? You not go into history books as a "You sue me lah, if not I'll sue lah Prime Minister".
LKY thinks that he may have built a legacy for himself and his Party, but the question is will it last? Look at the tyrant first emperor of china - while he is credited for building the Great Wall, but he is still a tyrant in the history books. I am sure people in his era hates him. Be more forgiving and build a great legacy in all the hearts of Singaporeans instead or using a sledgehammer, and hit everything hard, Mr Lee!

ReplyDeleteLet's look at something more recent, like the Kuomingtang in Taiwan, and the Jimintou (LDP) in Japan. Both incumbent parties have proven over the decades that they are NOT incorruptible; they've also proven that their monopoly on their countries' politics only helped foster a weak opposition that can't rise to the occasion when needed.
Truth is, the opposition camp for this election look promising again (after the false start that was Chee Soon Juan); now, only Singaporeans can decide if they want to keep it going by offering these people a pat on the back.

ReplyDeleteSome excerpts
For Singaporeans, the key election issues are jobs, medical care and living costs. The PAP has shunned a welfare system, preferring discretionary handouts such as those due to be paid to elderly and low-income workers just days before the poll.
For foreign investors such as Hewlett-Packard Co, Motorola Inc, and Morgan Stanley, what matters is political stability and pro-business policies.
"Singapore is run like a modern corporation," said Hans Hoefer, publisher of Insight Guides, a glossy travel series. "It's a very good place to do business."
More controversially, Lee lifted a ban on casinos last year and plans to build two multi-billion-dollar gambling resorts to attract tourists and create new service-sector jobs. The decision was classic Singapore, with the economic rationale counting for more than a public outcry over the social consequences.
"Singapore's government facilitates economic development," said Scott Price, Asia Pacific chief executive of logistics firm DHL, which moved its regional base to Singapore from Hong Kong in 2002.
Singapore's government facilitates economic development at what cost?
Is Mr. Lee contesting in Aljunied GRC?
ReplyDeleteHow come I see posters showing Mr. Lee in Aljunied GRC?
Is Aljunied GRC made into a SMC without us knowing?
Our Gov said this election is very important to all Singaporean. I strongly agreed cos i m a
ReplyDeleteSingaporean it concern me but Y ?? I m not given a fair chance to VOTE ??? Can't for once the whole nation vote together br it PAP/SAP/WP or etc... Answer is "NO" again Y ??? Cos this is our GOV set and said here come the Question : DID U PICK THEM TO BE OUR GOV ? ? When I was born they are already the GOV, till today they are still our GOV but never once the GOV ask me, DO I WANT THEM TO BE OUR GOV !!! Be fair to all Singaporean if is so important the election let the whole nation vote...... What I wantfrom my GOV is to show me all they know beside just leading and 1st GOV must open their ear to listen to me cos I m a Singaporean I have my right to pick my GOVERNMNENT.
Too strong a mandate 4 PAP will make 'em proud and arrogant. They'll raise prices more confidently since you gave 'em a strong mandate.
ReplyDeleteA not-so-strong mandate will make 'em be more humble, cautious and work harder in the next five years.
It's better 4 PAP and Singapore.
PAP is good. Yet, dey can become even better.
It seems inevitable that we move into a multi-party system where alternative voices can be heard, even MM is not disagreeable to this but would prefer first-world opposition. It would be a great service & legacy to the nation if MM could lift himself upwards into a non-partisan role (ie. come out of his current party) once the election is over to nurture/evolve the current system into a first-world govt of 2-3 parties for the benefit of the Singapore. He is already well-respected by most (if not all Singaporeans), being non-partisan will reinforce his legacy as the founding Father -- a first-world country with a first-world government.
ReplyDeleteI believe the only thing holding back Singaporeans from voting LHL out is fear of possibly losing a prime minister. It is natural to fear the unknown... to fear uncertainty. What people have to do is get over this fear.
ReplyDeleteThe consequences of not acting now are a lot more dire than what they seem to be.
Imagine PAP retains more than 2/3 of parliament. They will effectively be given carte blanche to rewrite the constitution to suit their own self serving needs. History has spoken for itself. They have redrawn constituent boundaries to their advantage, crushed dissent through the compliant judicial system and filled their own pockets in the process.
What is the worst case scenario if LHL loses his seat? We lose a prime minister who has done nothing for the welfare of the people. There are still other PAP MPs will be more than able to step up to the plate.
What is the PAP strategy? Fear. It is deeply rooted in all their arguments. From the withering attacks on James Gomez based on a silly non issue to claiming undue credit on potential deals with Shell and Exxon. These will happen largely based on factors external to Singapore. It is the regional business environment (factors beyond any political party's control) which determines whether this happens or not.
Do yourself a favour. Vote for the opposition or spread the message to voters in the contesting wards if you are in an uncontested ward. The alternative is to resign yourself to PAP rule while giving them the mandate to do as they please for the next 7 years (or more if they change the constituion). A lot could happen then. Think of the consequences... your parents could die without proper health care which you cannot afford, your children will suffer from a standard of living worse than what it currently is. Don't just talk about it, act on it!
Please wake up! LKY will NEVER take on a non partisan role. He pratises Machiavellian politics and employs Sun Tzu's tactics. Do you seriously think that he can be non partisan and be honest to himself and more importantly to you?
ReplyDeleteGosh! I'm surprised to come across this fantastic web that we, anyone, voters, Sin or non-Singaporeans, can talk our hearts out on the GE2006. I don't want to be classified as Singapore-fish. What is the Singapore-fish? A fish that is hard to be fished coz' we don't open our mouth! Rather, we are scared to open.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to vote for Opposition - regardless if they are of calibre. Reason? Following PM Lee's call for voters to show our mandate. My mandate is I want an Opposition voice in the Parliament. Someone who will question the policies you are implementing. The PAP should not be worried in having too many opposition opposing them and thus unable to realise year-after-year of budget, policies, etc. Don't forget it's because you are the ruling party, voted by people, you have an obligation to ensure the people's interest comes first. To ensure whatever policy you implement is beneficial to Singaporeans. Anyway, with so many Ministers around, they should also be delegated with 'fighting' the Opposition while the PM do the International networking. I mean that's what they're good at. That's what all big organisations do! The PM is like CEO, while he delegates his Ministers to perform the role of Head Of Departments.
If you feel you have first class government, you should have first class ability to take any negative comments that people says about you. If you think by having too many Opposition parties in the Parliament, then how other countries like big brother, USA, able to allow so many Opposition By the way, PM Lee said he won't have time to implement policies. What policies is he talking about? 7% GST? Is it true that we lend money to Indonesia? Could this be the cause on why our CPF monies gets farther and farther away to be collected? They never pay or we can't get paid? Maybe got to wait till we are 75 years old. We are poor but will definitely die rich.
Anyone take note of what Lim Boon Heng spoke a few days ago? Can compare notes on animal farm already. All people are fair but some are more fairer than others.
Isn't amazing how some candidates suddenly find time to wash the public corridors just as polling day is around the corner.
ReplyDeleteAnd even more amazing is how the tv station crew is on hand to film it.
Must be the info from some member of public who suddenly has a lot of 'news' to contribute.
One way to really wake them up is to vote LHL out of AMK!
ReplyDeleteWe can vote for him in the next election and he can come in the next term, and only then will he tone down and do more for Singaporeans.
Jasmine is right! They have the entire PAP and government machinery to keep it going... besides MM or SM can be caretaker PM for one term.
So what to do with LHL, well he can be MC - Ministerial Consultant.
Next term, he can PM again and I am sure he will do a better job next time.
wwwwwwwwow!
I am curious to how much LKY earns as a MM. The position is supposed to be higher than SM and PM, so if the PM is paid a few millions a year, then the MM is paid even more??? Now, why would LKY still want so much money when he must be filthy rich by now and he don't really have much time left to spend it? PAP mentioned paying themselves high salary is to make sure they don't get corrupted, so is the MM saying that he will be corrupted if he doesn't get his million dollar salary??? I think if he is really sincere about serving Spore, the very least he can do is to declare he will earn S$1 a year as a token, or he can donate his millions salary to charity.
ReplyDeleteIn response to the people's call to get back the jobs from foreign talents to Singaporeans, pap gan was seen doing a job formerly reserved for the bangla workers. Problem is, why do we need so many people in white to do the job done very well by just one bangla worker? are we that inefficient? or is this part of 'more jobs for singaporeans!' And the video cameras all around? to help gan make sure he can recollect his every move should he forget something? Like whether he had hosed a certain portion or applied the detergent. But the floor sure looked dirty. It's almost like the bangla was fired a month ago and the algae was left to grow so that gan could gun (hose) them down. funny.
ReplyDeletehehe. the washing of the public corridors really seem ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteMaybe can ask them to make it a weekly affair.
are u telling me that u have never err?
ReplyDeletekt
ReplyDeleteIf my memory did not fail me, did'nt someone committed a official secrecy offence sometime ago, charged in court and now an education minister. You do not seem to be worried about him too. The missing form is more important than government official secrecy? You mean forgiveness is only selective?
Does anyone even remember about the IDA making the massive mistake of overpaying Singtel (whose CEO is you-know-who) $4million?! Don't remember anyone at IDA being raked over the coals, having so many pages of newspaper coverage, getting fired/having his character assasinated!!
ReplyDeleteSingapore will end up like one of the neighbouring countries. Women going to foreign countries work as domestic maids. Men will go to work as construction workers. Don't mess up Singapore. Please vote wisely!!!

Now election over,Prime minister Lee is very tired and just thinking what to do for the people. Just because they lose a large margin, then they think of the people,
ReplyDeleteImagine if they win next election,2011 at 55% and the next is a danger sign like thier logo.
More people are becoming aware of thr need to become oppositions to let their voice heard, maybe next election 90 to 100 plus opposition candidnate. Ha,ha,ha....
NO MORE GOOD YEARS .......for....??????
Anon of 12.36PM
ReplyDeleteThis may most likely happen to most of our poorer citizens because those who are unhappy with the system will just vote with their feets, many have sold or downgraded their HDB and live comfortably in neighboring countries where housing price is probably 1/10th of ours. The richer ones go to Western countries. The bigger worry is if this turn into a tide and your HDB housing price collapsed. The best insurance for this not to happen is to urge the government to change its way of dealing with dissents and be more open and inclusive. The days of fighting "communist enemy" is long gone. Let the young generation face their future in their own ways. Afterall, it is their future.
