KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia

A MALAYSIAN minister has slammed Singaporean traders who buy Malaysian products, repack them and export them as their own, a news report said Monday, Feb 12 .

Malaysian rambutans in tin cans are being sold as Singaporean lychees in Hong Kong, Agriculture Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was quoted by the New Straits Times as saying.

Other Malaysian products such as orchids and ornamental fish are also being passed off as Singaporean goods, he said, warning that such a practice violated World Trade Organization regulations.

Muhyiddin said a number of Singaporean companies had refused to import pre-packaged Malaysian products.

"Now we know the reason, as it enables them to pack the products and rebrand them as Singaporean products to be resold elsewhere," he said.

"This has gone on for too long and it has to be stopped. They can import our products but these cannot be re-exported as their own," he said, adding that he would seek a meeting with Singaporean authorities on the matter.

Malaysian and Singaporean officials were not immediately available to comment.
