SMRT and SBS have a captured market here so they could do what they like at the expense of commuters. There is no incentive to manage the public transport system efficiently and effectively because that is not their priority but an afterthought. What is obvious is that the companies are more interested in spending money in the name of progress and service and the funds will come from higher fares regularly if not yearly. Oil price fluctuates and using that as one of the reason to justify fare increase is especially bad because when oil price is down then shouldn't the fare be adjusted down? Expansion and other developments are subsidized by the public coffer too. If the two companies are honest with the public they will be taking measures to manage costs, investments, level of service and commitment rather than single-mindedly exploiting the commuters, a hapless group at their collective mercy. The management teams lack creativity, and know only to target commuters as pay master and financier for their myriad projects and development. Is that fair? I think it is daylight robbery, and plain as daylight. Is it not time to take a leaf from the CEO of AirAsia, the Malaysian budget airline? How it manages its costs to offer a price much lower than the regular and seasoned operators and major airlines in the region. AirAsia has to operate creatively and wisely balancing many things without losing sight of their goal of providing a cheaper way to travel at a fraction of the price. That is the secret - the goal is the intent, is the commitment and dedication. That is honourable and commendable. AirAsia is still profitable, and is around for several years, and probably many more years to come.
Shame on you SMRT, SBS, PTC, and the MIW Lui. Opportunists and wayang kakis who has no qualms to foist their 'unsavoury' agenda on unsuspecting commuters for too long now. Just drop the pretense and tell us that you intend to increase fares - period. No need to justify with lies and half truths. It only shows you up for what you are - a grubby lot, and we have no respect for you at all.
