"I think Dr Tony Tan is eminently qualified and a very good candidate. But I leave it to Singapore voters to make their judgement and I have every confidence they will make a good judgement." PM Lee Hsien Loong reiterates his endorsement of Dr Tony Tan
Although PM Lee said that the government will not endorse any presidential candidates this time, the words he used clearly showed that the government is endorsing Dr Tony Tan. Dr Tony Tan kept emphaising the role he will play in advising the government on matters of the economy if he is being elected as president. The government could benefit by drawing on his vast experience on finance and international knowledge. On the other hand he was saying that the elected president should not interfere with the running and day to day operations of the government. So what is Dr Tony Tan trying to tell us? Isn't advising the government a direct interference with the operations of the government. If his full intention is to advise the government and participate on financial matters, then why did he resigned as a Minister in the first place. He would certainly be able to play a more important role in shaping the economy of the country if he remains as a Minister rather than trying to give advise to the government if after elected as president in which the government may or may not listen to him.
So far, Dr. Tony Tan has not been in disagreement with any government policies. However, during the last election, there were so problems being brought up resulting in great public discontent. Didn't Tony Tan realize the flaw of government's policies and yet until now he is still fully agreeing with all the government policie?. Isn't Dr Tony Tan a YES man. In fact, all his speeches supported the government's policies. So, what can you expect from Dr. Tan if he is elected as president? Will he speak out for the people? Maybe he will try to cover up for the government instead.
I think that the current system of the elected president is still at its experimental stage. It will take time to evolve into a good system to serve our country. Singaporeans must be realistic and accept the existing duties and powers of the elected president which is bound by the constitution. At the same time, government must also realise that the expectation of the people of our president has changed and the government must be prepared to amend the constitution to meet the needs and aspirations of the citizens.
