UNSW Asia pullout: students considering legal action

A GROUP of UNSW Asia students is seeking legal advice on a possible class action suit against the University of New South Wales (UNSW) for pulling out of Singapore.

A new petition seeking answers and reassurances is also being drawn up.

It calls for a dialogue with the school officials, the Economic Development Board - which was instrumental in bringing UNSW here - and the Education Ministry.

An earlier petition, for the university to reverse its decision, garnered 62 signatures.

UNSW Asia, the Singapore campus of the popular Australian university, announced its sudden closure last week, barely three months after starting operations.

Some students are trying to garner at least 50 students for the class action suit.

  1. Singapore and UNSW are obviously on to a nasty divorce. The timing for announcing the retreat is absolutely wicked. UNSW students cant apply for other local universities even if they want to as the applications have closed.

Note the local media portrayal of the saga. Another world's first without a doubt

Spare a thought for the staff who also believed in the dream.
Singaporeans gave up good jobs to work at UNSW Asia as did many people from other countries.
They are left with ittle chance recoup their costs

Andy Ho from the Shit Times is painting the Prof Hilmer person as a baddie now... wonderfully 154th!

Prof Hilmer and UNSW have given the mostly S'pore cohort a good choice - scholarships and future permanent residency.

Why kick up such a fuss. Man, I would have been smiling all the way to the land of oz. Just bear in mind not to bunk with somebody who has a family of lawyers, and a passion for baseball bats, and glizzy nightlife.
