  2. Anonymous3:53 PM GMT+8

According to Singapore Police Website there are are only 3 assembly centres set for tonight and two of them are PAP's and only one is set for WP. I don't think there is one for SDP or SDA tonight, I'm not sure.

WP is very likely to capture Aljunied. If not why PAP sent letters to every house in Aljunied. Something is worrying PAP.

quote: And the young pap forum was shutdown since yesterday.... lamer... their forum also full of hatred of pap... how to win....

Before they shut it down, many very good posts and threads were deleted especially those very intellectual and analytical ones, but many people keep posting more and more anti-pap sentiments and commentaries non-stop till they cannot tarhan anymore lah!

I think this election will be the turning point that will eventually transformed PAP into an opposition party, and then MM can recite his infamous quote again to the new PM:

"Repression, Sir is a habit that grows. I am told it is like making love-it is always easier the second time! The first time there may be pangs of conscience, a sense of guilt.

But once embarked on this course with constant repetition you get more and more brazen in the attack.

All you have to do is to dissolve organizations and societies and banish and detain the key political workers in these societies.

Then miraculously everything is tranquil on the surface.

Then an intimidated press and the government-controlled radio together can regularly sing your praises,
and slowly and steadily the people are made to forget the evil things that have already been done,
or if these things are referred to again they're conveniently distorted and distorted with impunity, because there will be no opposition to contradict."

    - Lee Kuan Yew as an opposition PAP member speaking to Workers Party Singapore Parliamentary Members, Debates, 4 October, 2011

Citing examples such as the feedback unit and the consultation exercises on Remaking Singapore, Mr Goh added: "For major policies, we discussed with the people. Alternative voice means listening to the views of the people, not the voice of Opposition in Parliament."

What have we been consulted? Do we have a say in who is to be the next Prime Minister?
Who decided when to increase GST to 5%, did the people agree?
Who decided to increase the age limit for withdrawal of CPF, was it the people?
Who decided the Casino? Were the people's views taken?

What is this SM talking about? Goodness.

    I have something to add...

We.. bloggers should help spead the new WP brand to the other voters who "solely" rely on the official media for election news. For the next 5 years, spread the words to every family in Singapore. This will then help ensure their succes in the next coming election, where ever they run for....

Singapore needed fairer electoral system e.g. mixed Proportional Rep (PR) and First Past The Post (42 seats each). Either one man will each have 2 votes so can participate in each system or otherwise pre-register to chose which system to vote: PR or FPTP but not both. Probably one man, two votes each is simpler.

With party list every 2th to be woman, every 3rd to be Malay, every 4th to be Indian. So party list guarantees such representation under PR even if such candidates cannot get in under FPTP.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous7:11 PM GMT+8

The design of GRCs (once upon a time there were only 3 members when first introduced) is to ensure minority representation. This is not ideal nor fair because where is the minority representation in single member wards? There is only a guarantee to get in minorities into Parliament but no guarantee that all wards will return a minority.

Also is it only Malays and Indians who are minorities? What about Eurasians or mixed-Asians (i.e. parents are both Asian but different ethnicity)? Do they have to be "certified"? It looks like they do not if there is say a Malay on the slate. But then it is so awkward that one candidate has to be certified but another (who is also a minority) does not have to be certified. It is a lousy system at the moment and needs more than fine tuning.

Internet is powerful, no doubt, but those who are not that high tech still need to rely solely on television and radio for news and updates.
To control broadcasting is the first thing to do when you conquer a country, which is why all the negative or not-so-supportive statements were announced and published for the Opposition.
One new face from pXp said she is disappointed with the Opposition because the Opposition has not new idea and only know how to criticise others. I am surprised to know that pXp does not criticise others, how noble they are! And I really wonder who are those who are into 'name-callings'? In secondary schools, the pastoral care period emphasize on 'not to bully' topic and one of the sub-topics is NO NAME-CALLING! And what is the pXp doing now?
With two 'seniors' watching a person who is over his forties on everything he does, what kind of mandate does he want from the people?
Are we looking forward to have more people from pXp who talk about the no of cubicle in the ladies should be equivalent to the number of cubicle and uriners in Gents?
Do you want people who are backbenches to represent you and in fact they hardly say anything?
Things are not the same and yet someone does not want to accept the fact! He, perhaps, would want to be like Qin Shihuang, to seek for Longevity Medicine from some divine out there in the ocean.

SDP is now a no hope party. If they still want to be in politics, they should merge with WP (assuming WP will have them).

WP also is not going anywhere so long as there are other opposition parties. They should join SDA as an alliance partner. In which case all future GEs would be PAP vs SDA.

Meanwhile Steve Chia's party, Chiam's party and PKMS should consider merging. It is too unwieldy and confusing for the electorate. Better that there should be two parties WP and maybe SPP (being a merged party) being components of SDA for next GE (2010?) and that's it. This is only way to get more than a dozen seats. Presently if there are too many opposition parties, they will still cancel each other even if they try to co-operate simply because electorate will have no confidence in all of them and see them only as mosquito parties.

  26. Anonymous7:32 PM GMT+8

The phrase is "Dominant Party" and the idea is that the "Dominant Party" would last as long as Japan's LDP. But that LDP is big and with factions. It could be factions result and Faction A is up one GE and Faction B is up another GE. This situation may result where opposition is perpetually weak and divided. Hence Dominant Party checks itself through Factional balance. But this has so far not emerged in Singapore and no signs of this happening. Why? Parliament is relatively small. Country is relatively small. So Dominant Party without factions, likely to continue.

Will there be more democracy for citizens? Possibly not. There may be some style changes, but rights-based changes are unlikely in Singapore. In Singapore, there is a bare-minimum rights situation in a representative democracy. There is no direct democracy e.g. through referendums. There is not even non-binding large scale opinion polls being published in the media on voting intentions and views on important issues. Only internet polling on often just trivial issues.

Is this first world democratic system? Far from it. It is maybe second world system that by all admission is NOT a level playing field. No body pretends it is a level playing field any more with numerous changes to the Constitution first with intro of GRC system, then the many amendments to the GRC system plus moving of electoral boundaries (a.k.a. gerrymandering).

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anonymous7:37 PM GMT+8

Seriously the GRC is one big lame excuse. If the constituencies were left as SRCs and the election process works the way it is meant to, ie each party puts a candidate forward that has the best chance of winning the election which in all likelihood would be a minority who can best emphasize with the consituents and understand their problems. The nature of the process akin to demand and supply theory in the free market economoy will ensure that a minority is elected into parliament. The reason why we need GRCs is because the PAP has to fix the election process.

  48. For those who fear that your votes are traceable, don't worry, they are not.

What actually happens is that when you vote, you are actually assigned to a particular ballet box. In fact, your whole area is assigned to the same ballet box.

Hence, they can tell how to draw the boundaries next election. Firstly, this is super unfair to the opposition. Secondly, they are using the fear element to win votes (by not clearing the rumour that our votes are traceable).

There was an incident where Goh promised a particular block in hougang that if they voted 60% to PAP, they would get upgrades regardless of whether PAP wins hougang or not.

And when asked to explain, Goh and MM just said that they can do estimates while doing their walkabouts. F***king li*rs!!!

They don't want to clear the rumor that PAP can trace our vote.
Disgusting. Use fear factor to win.

Sorry I couldn't raise this point before the election, cos I only realize this when I vote today...

    ReplyDelete
  49. i think goh's strategy really disgusts quite alot of people instead of luring.. BOOO GCT!!! BOOO!!! stop all ur underhand tactic and u might get more.. and also, bootlick us better! geee!

    tats y i suspected ploy..

    ReplyDelete
  52. Will somebody please draft a letter on behalf of LHL to GCT telling him that his services is no longer required since he has filed to deliver.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I hope that we, for this 4 years to come till the next election. should expose to frends on wat sort of tactic they used.

Some of them might not be visiting websites like this. they might be viewing skews (not news). thus might have a skewed idea.

hope the next GE they'll do better.. and oh ya, so steve chia really quiting? i really thing he should not becos its a rather close margin. or rather closer...

    ReplyDelete

    Time to migrate liao!

    Why Steve Chia never win?

    ReplyDelete
  77. yup.. all oppositions get back their deposits, at least not that bad lor. PM won marginally verses young WP candidates.. well you draw your own conclusion

so, regardless of how they intend to redraw boundaries, they can't avoid the backlash which will continue to get stronger so this tactic should not be as effective next time - hopefully!

    keep the results coming in.

Hence if u guys really want to show your support start joing volunteers for WP or SPP (SDA). Help them out! Show your support..
