bring on your cameras and video cams!
Bring also a packet of peanuts to enjoy while listening to the Oppositions' speech.
ReplyDeleteSince NKF cannot be taken as an issue to silent the Oppositions, then bring peanuts to remind everyone of NKF!
Upgrading is a threat!
NKF is a court issue which cannot be discussed.
Then peanut become a strong and useful weapon to silent pnp, especially in Sembawang GRc rally against silly Khaw!
Spread the word around.
I hope the younger generation will have the wisdom to vote right. They are more sensible and though they may not be as willing to step foward, they are definately aware of our political situation and the changes necessary for the good of all Singaporeans.
ReplyDeleteI am 29 year old and born after independence. Though I came from a humble family, I managed to have a good education and have a good job as a professional, a house and a car. Indeed our society based on merit has benefited folks like me to let me have a chance to do well in life. But I think times have changed and folks like me want something more. I want a more engaging political scene and an active civic society and not a nanny state. I have no doubt that PAP has done an excellent job but its role has got to evolve into what the people want and the times.
ReplyDeleteI am a resident of Yew Tee. Here's my account of the PAP Rally starring (new?) incumbent Mr Gan Kim Yong, conducted this evening at Chua Chu Kang Park.
ReplyDeleteTurnout was ok, maybe 200 people scattered around. Hardcore PAP fans numbered maybe 15-20, and they were holding homemade placards, and shouting their approval at any opportune moment. One time was particularly embarrassing when Mr Lim Boon Heng commented on Mr Gan on being a youthful 47 years old, asking approval of the crowd. Of course, only the hardcore zealots - all 15-20 of them - cheered. It just seemed a little inappropriate. The rest of the crowd were just fanned out and in the usual lackadaisical state that so characterises Singaporeans.
I just caught the news coverage and of course, there're plenty of close-ups of PAP supporters with beatific expressions and cute-sy, "I 'heart' Mr Gan" placards. Any indication of the near-comatose crowd is both in the background and out-of-focus.
In any case, I arrived late, and missed speechs from Mr Lim Hng Kiang and Mr Lim Swee Say. I did however, manage to catch Mr Gan's speech both in Mandarin and English. Essentially it was sedate and well-meaning. Best adjective I can think of is inoffensive. There's no need for me to recount his speech here. We'll all be inundated with the whole heartware/hardware nonsense soon enough anyway.
What I did find offensive however, came next.
The last speaker was Mr Lim Boon Heng of the PMO, and Secretary-General of NTUC. He wasted no time laying into NSP contender Mr Steve Chia, citing specifically the issue of a crow infestation in CCK. Now I've lived here near 5 years, and I've never known that there was a crow problem. Admittedly, CCK is a big place, so I might just not be aware.
Anyway, Mr Lim's point is that Mr Chia says he has been working the ground in CCK for 4 years, yet Mr Gan blows in for a few weeks, heroically mobilises the right departments and settles the crow issue once and for all. Now I might be wrong but hasn't the MP for Chua Chu Kang for the last few years been Assc Prof Low Seow Chay? Wouldn't the crows be his problem? Did Lim Boon Heng just call Assc Prof Low ineffectual?! Should he write down his speeches beforehand and get someone else to read it first?
As if that isn't enough, Mr Lim starts talking about the goodies he'll provide should Mr Gan be elected.
Apparently, residents have been complaining to Mr Gan of unemployment problems. Mr Lim, head of NTUC, promises to "move heaven and earth" - his words - for Mr Gan to find jobs for the unemployed if Mr Gan is elected. He then goes on to say that if Mr Chia is elected and comes to him (in the capacity of NTUC boss) with the same set of problems, involving the same CCK residents, he will tell Mr Chia to figure it out by himself, he's not going to bother since Mr Chia is not from his party. I wish I recorded this but that's pretty much what he said, in front of an audience, and on-camera.
Did he just threaten us? If we play ball, we'll get jobs but if we don't, we can starve for all he cares? Even if Mr Chia is rightfully elected to be MP for CCK, his words will cary no weight with his PAP colleagues? This is like the 60% lift-upgrading thing, isn't it? Opposition wards will become slums and ghettos with lifts that (gasp!) stop only at alternate floors and with jobless people living off roasted crow meat...
I found Mr Lim's remarks to be highly offensive and my general feeling right now is of disappointment and righteous indignation. In fact, I'm near seething at the fact that I am not able to vote due to a walkover. I have a mandate for PM Lee but I'm being kept from the only government sanctioned expression, and that is the ability to vote. I hope someone from Chua Chu Kang SMC is as offended as I am, and does accordingly.
I agreed with Adrian. Based on "Maslow's hierarchy of needs", needs for love, esteem, and actualization come after physiological and safety needs are met. Such people begin to have a system of morality fully internalized and independent of external authority [wikipedia].
ReplyDeleteThis is the type of politics that the PAP are playing, always threatening the voters. Let wake up and do the right thing. Vote in Steve Chia. We may not have that many credible opposition coming to CCK every 5 year. You have the opportunity to vote so please do your part for the future of Singapore.
