Somehow the word EXCESSIVE seems grossly inadequate to describe what Mr Yeo is doing. Given that he is PM Lee’s team mate in Ang Mo Kio GRC, I would assume PM Lee knows about this and approves of Mr Yeo’s 64 other jobs. I would also assume that having 64 other jobs is consistent with the “Rules of Prudence” issued by PM Lee.

    Mr Yeo Guat Kwang

    Dear Editor,

I read with interest the article “Yeo Guat Kwang – PAP MP with 64 other jobs” published on your website.

I would like to clarify the points made in this article, which I feel do not fairly reflect my current duties as a Member of Parliament and have been taken out of context.

I have three main duties; As the Director for Quality Work-life and All Nationalities at NTUC which champions Workplace Health and Workers’ Safety and Fair Treatment for all workers including migrant workers, as a Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC; and an honorary duty as the Elected President for Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE).

My other affiliations listed on both the Parliament website and your article are memberships and advisory roles. I wish to clarify that apart from my job as NTUC director and as Independent Director to the few companies stated. I do not receive remuneration for these other roles.

I see these roles as affiliations which help me to improve my understanding of the ground, in the context of my duties as either an MP, CASE President or NTUC Director. These are platforms that help me to reach out to and serve people from all walks of lives.

For instance, it is part of my MP duties to sit on two GPCs; As a labour MP, I am supposed to play an advisory role to several unions, and this in turn give me opportunities to be with the workers at the ground. Same as these, as part of my duties as CASE president, I was invited to advisory position of the respective trade associations. I undertake these duties pro-bono.

I also participate actively in what may seem like many committee memberships. These may be standing or ad-hoc committees that were convened for specific purposes. Some of these committees have since adjourned because the project is completed.

For my advisory positions in VWOs, I was invited to sit on their board in my personal capacity and I undertake these meaningful roles on a pro bono basis too. In this capacity, I have helped these VWOs raise funds and grow. I see this as an important way for me to further strengthen my role in serving the community and Singaporean.

I wish to emphasise that the many roles listed in the article should not be taken out of context. They represent my affiliations and networks and are episodic in nature. I am fully committed to my duties as an MP, as a union leader and as a consumer advocate. I believe that these affiliations and networks should be seen as my attempts to connect with the many good people and organisations that have and are doing their part to better the lives of Singaporeans. I think of it as a large network of family and friends, with whom I have connections with and with whom we share mutual resources, advice and support.

I thank you for publishing this response on your website as a sign of good faith. I would like to invite the Temasek Review editors, writers and readers to join me at my Meet the People Session or social events to see for themselves the work I and my team do on the ground.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Yeo Guat Kwang

    Hi Mr Yeo,

Can you disclose which jobs are you paid for? (and the quantums)
I sincerely hope that you can focus on your work as an MP and not get too distracted by all the other jobs/activities you engage in.

    Thank you.

      Hi Mr Yeo,

The GRC system as we know is a big blunder in that it gives MPs like you an incredible amount of time for other jobs other than as an MP. There should be a law to change all MP appointments to full time to justify the almost $20000/month you are sucking from taxpayers a month. For most average Singaporeans, one has to be in upper management and slog 12 hours a day to earn that, and not have the luxury of meeting residents once a week, attending some dinners and write some letters for residents to earn that amount. We recognise that the system us long overdue for change and MPs like you should not have become MPs in the first place. Something needs to be done!

    2. This is an abuse of your position as an MP to get independent directorship. It is common among other PAP MPs. Looks like an opportunity to boost their income that working for the constituency they are voted in. An independent director gets around $60K - $100K per year plus perks. Will you declare your total income? Moreover, any independent director that takes more than 2 positions will have difficulties fulfilling fiduciary duties. Singapore is unique that public companies has all these independent directors as "beautiful flow vase " to their board of directors and most of them just rubber stamp many decisions.

    3. Irate citizen, wake up. MP isn't a full time position. And you don't have to be senior management to make $20k a month. Also, u think MPs aren't senior management? They are voted into their jobs, mind u. Please update yourself.

    4. Montg, one of the directors is Japan Food Holdings. Director pay there is between 18-33k per annum. Not the 60k Quantum u say. And if JFH share holders r alright, why bother.

  3. Hi Mr Yeo,

From your letter I read that you hold so many titles, be it paid or probono. Besides the pay, do you have time to work for people's welfare, for those who voted you as a mp, as each of the position surely takes time. Even if so, how much have you allocated to your Mp role? Once a week an hour the most for writing letters for people who come to your people meeting session?

Simple question then: why don't you take on the GRC MP as "pro-bono" also? And if that is a way to give back to society, why doesn't ALL the MPs undertake their task as MPs as "Pro-bono" also? If white collars or blue collars are prohibited to take on other job even though different jobscope, shouldn't such a high position like director or even Independant director prove to be even more key position and this should not be allowed (holding so many positions at one go) Pro-bono or not doesn't seem to be the issue here.... guess nobody would like to see their own "independent director to be missing at crucial meeting" due to tied up/clash of other company meeting etc, it do sound like clash of interest. Also IF the independent director CAN be absent/excuse from meeting due to his other commitments/positions outside, doesn't it prove him to be dispensable aka redundant aka waste of company resources or should I say taxpayers money if he is MP.

Now I know as to why he, Yeo Guat Kwang the MP for AMK GRC at Ci Yuan (Hougang West ) area never reply on two occasions emails copied to him at his Town Council and NTUC address. He is above PM, LHL who when received email do revert and re-direct to respective department concerned. And, happy to say the respective department did revert thereafter. I have not seen him do any neighborhood ground walk about in 3.5 years !

Why bother the number of jobs he holds? Anyone can do so if they have the ability. Importantly is how much he has contributed to the position. People are paid for the value they bring to an organisation, and not the time spend inside an organisation. He can party all day long but if he can bring the money to feed all the fellow staffs, then what's wrong with that?

  7. Dear ministers,
Why everytime economic crissis minister say singaporean have to bite the bullet and move on? Why cant minister bite the bullet and move on instead? Reducing own salary to maybe $1000, since minister have so many other position that generate revenue or salary unlike we citizen. 1 job per person.
