They are already the highest paid civil servants in the world compare to George Bush's annual pay of USD 300000 plus other non-monetary benefits which our ministers also have like MM's medical maintenance is is attended by state doctors.
If they keep on comparing, there is no end.Let those who wants to leave the Civil Service for better pay leave because 'better pay' have no ceiling and no end.Its a free market but lets confirm one thing first, how many percentage left Civil Service for because of the 'better pay' reason? If other reasons occupy a higher percentage then PM Lee's reason is no longer valid.
For corruption, if one really wants to be corrupt, no amount of basic pay will be likely stop him.If Tony Blair compare his pay to british footballers, then where should it stop?
Every industry has its own specific purposes. There is no way civil servants can compare its pay to market-related pay and demand like law, medicine, big business because civil service is a non-profit organisation.I say to each industry on its own.It is like comparing chalk and cheese.
Why not a middle executive in finance industry compare to another in the manufacturing industry?
I also seriously doubt the civil servants who left civil service can perform as well in the private sector since most of them has no private sector experience before and no achievements. Private sector working environment is more competitive and less protected than public sector since companies face the threat of closing down and facing losses which public sector will never face.
PM Lee's way of comparision is really bizarre and not valid. Each time they lament about not being paid enough. How much is enough for them? I bet every Singaporean also complain not being paid enough but do they have the luxury to raise their own wages? They like to compare too much but where do it end?
I hate the media blitz during this period for constantly bombarding us with why government pay,GST and population SHOULD go up.It is sick, they have been using this tactic for years . Shame on Singapore media. Give us some analysis and articles why GST and civil service SHOULD NOT go up as well and let us compare and contrast.
My message to PAP is do not hold us to ransom all the time. If we do not increase your pay does not give you the license to be corrupt either. Besides, your pay is already very high and a 'talent' in public sector could be a mediocre in private sector. PM Lee's way of comparision is seriously flawed.
They should compare their performance to how Singaporeans standard of living is and how well each Singaporeans have improved and have enjoyed better because of the govt.
ReplyDeleteThis should be the criteria. For an increase, not high earners median wages.
What Repulic has stated is fair...but voting is over, maybe next time Singaporeans will be awake.
To all Singaporeans, stop bitching, you have cast your votes and you get what you voted for. Live with it. Come the next election you will again have forgotten all about these current burning issues and vote the same way, thinking only about the carrot that will no doubt be hanging in front of you.
ReplyDeleteIn other countries, normally a politician is someone who done well in the private sector then they enter to serve in the public sector with lower pay. Looks like for Singapore, people join civil service for money more than anything. Can the Singapore Ministers really achieve what they achieve if they work for the private US/EU MNC? Don't compare pay with CEO and CFO because how many can really make it to these positions if they work in private sector. Wake up!
ReplyDeleteHow come despite the already high salaries the PAP has not been successful in attracting the top salary earners and possibly the real top corporate talent to enter politics. The only exceptions that come to mind are the two ex Chairman of Shell. Other than these two, the rest were just middle management people like chemists, HR Manager, etc. Sure they have approached some of the best and brightest but they have all declined. The "top talent" being inducted other than the odd lawyer or surgeon who may have earned high salaries but who essentailly have no real management experience in the private sector have been senior military/police/civil service/stat boards or GLC types. And of the ex-Ministers, just who are actually now occupying high office in the corporate sector? Stat Boards are not conunted as private sector. In the final analysis, the comparison and benchmarking is simply not justified!
ReplyDeleteHow good can they be if they consider setting up a Northlight school for delinquents as a major achievement for the MOE and hence so-and-so deserves a promotion?
ReplyDeleteI have even heard some teachers claim that they have suggested similar ideas. So, what is so great and original about the idea that makes it a major achievement?
Our country is doomed. Somebody please set up an archive of blog entries touching on the WSM affair, NKF, GST and this/related debates to remind us voters when the next election approaches. People tend to forget.
What can we say ? Cronies rule Singapore. We know that and because of us doing nothing about it other than screaming here and there, we are cronies too.
ReplyDeleteWhy our hardworking Ministers need an urgent increase in pay...
ReplyDelete"Comrades!" he cried. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers.
The whole management and organisation of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples.
Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back! Surely, comrades," cried Squealer almost pleadingly, skipping from side to side and whisking his tail, "surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?"

ReplyDeleteI totally disagree with you....in the first place if you follow how elections work in Singapore, you will realise that not many Singaporeans DID vote!
Without the "walkovers" and the dump/unfair GRC thingy, and also an elections department that DO not report to the PM, I think the results would be different......
to anon 8.39am, i so totally disagree with you. what's so difficult? just cast that damned non-pap vote when you had that chance to vote!!! vote anybody who is not from pap. there are damned enuff walkovers for pap to have major influence and not forgetting the fact that civil service runs on its own too.
ReplyDeleteto the 66.6%, serve you damned right. i can't wait to see the next screwing by your pappy masters.
to the pappy pigs, i'm counting the days to your ignoble downfall. justice must prevail!!!
