Dear Mr. Low Thia Khiang (Secretary-General of the Workers' Party);
Singapore Election Watch would like to congratulate you on your joyous victory at Hougang! With almost 63% of the votes, you've called upon a grand celebration! Your victory provides us with great motivation, and it's most defintely a testatment that one does not need the blessings of Mediacorps nor the PAP to achieve your accomplishments. We applaud your courage and that, of your collegues at the Workers' Party.
Over the years, we've had the opportunity to hear the PAP camp boast about their much acclaimed 'first world government'. Yet, as Singaporeans, we've had to endure third world gutter politics courtesy of the PAP ministers. During the course of this year's General Election, the PAP has conducted itself shamelessly. Their members had resorted to name-calling, blatant lies and intimidation. They continue to file libel suits against opposition leaders, and demonize them as hooligans. Indeed, you've spoken on this during the election rallies. Also, the CNA most recently published an article entitled, "Will the real First World Voter please stand up?" which begged the question whether Singaporeans were First World citizens in the first place. Perhaps the CNA finds this difficult to believe because afterall, they've not exactly been the First World press. Just consider: they've been ranked 140th! However, the question shouldn't be whether we are First World citizens, but whether the government that enforces it's own might deserves First World citiezenry.
Singapore Election Watch declares that a third world government deserves a third world response! In November 2004, Ukraine observed the popular Orange Revolution where the pro-Russian leader was ousted by the people. Likewise, several countries including Georgia, Lebannon observed similar popular uprising. Just last month, for example, the Himalayan capital of Nepal observed an old-fashioned, but a genuine revolution. For two weeks since April 6th, Nepal had been paralysed by a general strike called by the political parties and backed by Maoist guerrillas. Hundreds of thousands rushed out onto the streets demanding democratic reforms despite the implementation of a curfew and a shoot-to-kill order to the army. However, by now, the people had lost their fear and this has enabled them to feel invincible. If a few people refuse to obey orders, more will follow and a popular revolution will oust the despot! In the end, the Nepalese secured a end of a direct Palace rule.
Mr. Low, you're in a grand position to call for a dramatic revolution. We have entrusted our votes in your hands so that you would represent us fully. Indeed, we've called for reform during this election campaign but there hadn't been a change: the results are same as the last and the PAP remains in office with a majority. This is not a progression. Please work with all the opposition parties, and put to task a new set of actions demanding an alternative system! This is possible with the mommentum we currently hold, the support the opposition parties have achieved and the the overall disillusionment in all Singaporeans.
Sincerely,
Singapore Election Watch
Well Said. How abt Chiam be chairman, LTK be Sec gen, SL be women chairwoman and Glenda be young women chair. That will surely be able to get the right guys to join the AP.
I hope today is a dawn of new era (Better than in 91) and pls work hard to give Spr hope for the future. Like the gahmen said, this is for your future. Spr... Wake up and fight for your future. You dont need 82 PAP MP to make a good govt but you need more Opp to make PAP a good govt.
It is time that the people of Singapore wake up from all this facade and respond passionately if not for their own future, then at least the destiny of their descendants.
Mr. Low, I have given my vote which I took so long to cross out. I have never taken so much effort, care in drawing a cross and neither have I been so worried abt making a mistake because I want my vote, the only thing that I believe truly belongs to me, to be for you and the Workers Party.
My entire family and I believe in the WP and SDA, we believe that you will help secure a better future fo all of us.
To Mr. Chiam, you are a true inspiration to me. I do not belong to your ward in the 2006GE but you are truly fantastic and a force to be reckoned with. We hope PAP gets the message into their thick skulls.
To both the WP and SDA, GOOD LUCK AND LEAD US ALL TO A BETTER TOMORROW!
LHL is a disgrace to singapore politics.
I do not think the SDA and WP ought to merge. I think the WP has a good educated image this time round, and it will be better for it to remain this way. I like SDA, but I like WP even more. In SDA, I like chiam. In WP, I like the entire team of candidates. :)
i don't think the WP should merge with SDA or SDP. it'll dilute the party rather than strengthening it.
Where are you guys reading 'merge'?
I support a retaliation against PAP govt.
I was at YCK stadium earlier. People were cheering wildly when Chiam's victory was announced, and some even thought that sort of made up for WP's Aljunied loss. Low and WP must know very well that the loss there is critical because all oppositions have failed to secure a GRC. So in reality nothing has changed.
Chiam is history because he is largely ineffective in parliament anyway. This GE result is a failure for the oppositions, considering the ground wasn't sweet for the PAP and the way they shot their own feet so many times.
The Singapore media won it for PAP!
PAP campaign was the worst in 20 years!
LeE Kuan Yew never got below 85%
Goh Chok Tong never below 75%
What about the third part of this trinity?
Liberate Singaporeans, PAP!
Let us go!
Let us be free!
Stop enslaving now!
Let the media go!
Let the unions go!
Let our education system go!
Let our people go!
Give opposition a chance!
Let the GRC go!
Let the ISA go!
Let the OSA go!
Let the SPH and Mediacorp go!
Let the PA go!
Let the SIA go!
Let Temasek Holdings go!
Please Please Please!
Dear readers,
Do you guys read history? It was the PAP government that lead us from a british abodoned city to a vibrant Republic of Singapore today.
I see peace and harmony, economy is growing.
I am living in east side, Tampines GRC area, Tampines have progressed greatly, just visit Tampines town and you will see why.
I feel you guys like to see a fight, like to see the dark horse to win, you guys want to see some fight, but please think of what PAP did and not.
I am sure you guys can see around, I dont see proverty, compare with other countries, I dont see political fallbacks and etc
Please be sastified with what you have now, and appreciate what the government is doing.
Complain about the issues like Foreign Talent taking away your jobs, so if you are a talented, hardworking adult, I dont see a reason that issues coming up, unless you are afraid of the competition, remember your grandfathers or mothers are FOREIGNERS too.
And all that I have said, I am not standing on a side of PRO-PAP or any other party, I see the results, the hardwork that is done by the government, if you want to complain about the much issue, then think again, if PAP is overuled, you think there will be people who can do things better than PAP?
Yes look at those opposition parties, they have their claims and can do much better than PAP, so do you think they can do better than Mr Lee Kuan Yew?
Look at the posts at this blog really disgusts me what the new generation of Singapore is coming to, you claims about PAP government being this and that yet do you think they want that way? MP are not gods, they can step by step improve Singapore but dont take things for granted and want more, think the possible and stand in other shoes.
Singapore politics will be endangered by people who wants to see a fight and doesnt consider the consequences, people who believe the opposition party and their claims that is easily said than to be done without much researching and reading or understanding of the overall view.
But it is lucky that most Singaporeans know how to think
It's obvious that you're not one of those who 'know how to think'!
Lee Kuan Yew didn't kick out the British, they withdrew because the Japanese came in. I personally think the Japanese withdrew because they thought the Soviet Empire was going to attack them. Others say that they withdrew because the Americans dropped the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagashaki! That's still being debated. Whatever it is, Mr. Lee didn't kick out the British empire nor the Japanese! Get your facts straight because you try to bring us down!
No one's saying Lee Kuan Yew didn't do anything, but what he did were possible because Singapore was still a village! If you think the same policies from 1965 are going to work on us now, you're in for a rude awakening!
And we don't 'read' history, we know our history very well, thank you!
Get bent!
Ok, as I clearly said, this website is biased, and please read my topic again, I didnt said Lee Kuan Yew drove the British away or what so ever, and please read again I said "British abodoned city", I didnt say anything about what you claimed of.
And once again, I didnt say you guys are saying Lee Yuan Yew isnt doing anything.
And if you want to talk about politics, learn to read the facts well. If you talk about politics read more and carefully.
Tell me the are the old policies not working, or they harming Singapore progress? I dont see Singapore economy or standards of living going down, ones who work hard will get a good job. Facilities are there.
So please do suggest ways the policies can be reformed to a better way and that works.
A "British abandoned" city eh? Just because the British abandoned us, it makes a greater deal for Lee Kuan Yew to have become the leader over say, other imperialists? Why would you even bring this up? Lee Kuan Yew didn't fight for our independence, the Malaysians simply severed ties because of him.
Anyway, you want to talk about Singapore's economy, let me provide you with a passage I just read:
"All the same, Singapore's leaders acknowledge times are changing. Its "economic miracle" is under threat as competition mounts from larger neighbours, as well as the region's emerging superpowers. They admit if the PAP cannot guarantee sustained prosperity, pressure for political reform may increase.
As China's wealth and power grows, Singapore (whose 4.2 million people are 75% ethnic Chinese) is beginning to resemble a pilot for a far bigger project."
Singapore experience an economic implosion because well, we were a village to start with! If you're going to examine the amount of progress from a village to a city, it's obviously going to be a huge a improvement! However, to assert that these same policies are going to continue work as our neighbours experience massive phases of industrialization, well, you're living in a bubble!
Our 'free' press is a joke. We're living in under a totalitarian rule. The enomic disparity is widening. Our human rights' record is shameful. Our 'minister' continue to rob us blind, while we slave away in poor working standards. I am not sure which planet you're from, but the circumstances are indeed, grim. People don't complain without a reason, and we're not dissillusioned over nothing.
And by the way, these views are independent of this website. If you're going to attack me, go ahead. Stop attacking this website of biased intentions! My personal views don't represent the author of this site. Get bent!
Check out this funny parody about the recent James Gomez Saga
It's simply because of people like hte anonymous guy that I will always say, Singaporeans deserve no one but the PAP.
They deserve third world leaders because their thinking is like third world countries. They deserve elitist mandarins because they would trust them with their hearts, livers and kidneys.
Note to all Singaporeans: If you voted them in you have no right to bitch about how hard it is to get a job, how expensive things have become etc. Shut up and quit whining.

All you sre you know what you have written? Have you ever walked around Redhill MRT Station and see how the older folks are? Have you been reading articles on how those residing in one room or two-room flats are suffering? When you are comfortably living in your house, are be blinded by your own so-called 'achievements' and have ignored that group that have been suffering all alone? It is because there are people like you, who are so ignorant with what is going on out there and only know how to attack people who wish to have more voices in the Parliment!
IF THE ARTICLES MADE YOU SICK OR DISGUSTED YOU, THEN DO NOT READ THEM!!!! NOBODY HAS INVITED YOU TO READ! IT IS OUR FREEDOM TO WRITE! IF YOU ARE SO HIGH ABOVE US, THEN OUR ARTICLES ARE NOT WORTH YOUR READING AT ALL, BUT BASED ON THE FACT THAT YOU REPLIED, WHAT DOES THAT SHOW? YOU ARE JUST A HYPOCRITE!
Have you not been told of how two major clients from PSA chose the alternative?
How many more NKF cases must we have?
Singaporeans are working their lives off not because they want to seek a luxuious life! It is because they got to keep up with the high COST of LIVING!!!! It is not like someone up there has claimed, trying to get a more luxurious life!!!!
Please get your facts right before pointing accusing fingers at those people - US, who supports the Opposition!
By the way, as far as the legal system in Singapore is concern, it is not illegal to support the Opposition! Whatever that has been posted on the main, those articles are reporting exactly what is going on, so what so bias is this website? Comparing someone who just came in and start criticising the entire website, who is bias now?? May I know what is your definition for those who nicknamed other as wayang and hooligan? Wake up, Singapore does not belong to PAP! It is the citizens. You are using Tampines gosh, why not you use places liek Woodlands or like what I have said earlier, Redhill, and even Chinatown! It is similar to comparing a desserted island to a highly modernised country! You are looking at a small area. Open your eyes and watch what is actually going on!

I think no one has suggested that the PAP should not form the government. At this stage, I think it is good for Singapore to more opposition MPs to scrutinise PAP policies. How is thay bad for the country. Does it make the PAp govern less effectively when they have to account for their policies to Parliament? DOes it make the PAP less effective when the media is less biaesd? If all these weaken the PAP's ability to govern, then we must ask ourselves whether the PAP is really as capable as they claim. In the medium term, we must develop a strong strong alternative to the PAP government. As long as the electorate believes the PAP is still doing a good job, the PAP should remain in power (with a significant presence of opposition MPs). If we don't have an alternative, and continue to rely on PAP and only the PAP, what happens if the PAP were one day to disintegrate through infighting? What if one day PAP is led by a leader who is a megalomaniac or has become senile? Are you going to surrender you right to replace the government to the PAP and always let them decide for you who should lead Singapore? I hope not. And without a strong alternative, what choice do you seriously have if you no longer believe the PAP should lead Singapore? How do we know that this is the best a government in Singapore can do. For every policy that has been introduced by the PAP, how do you know there were no better alternatives? Or are you just happy to blindly trust that everything the PAP has done is for the good of Singapore? As LKY has pointed out, no government will do anything to make it easier to let the opposition win votes. This means that at the end of the day, for the PAP, PAP's survival must always comes first. But for Singaporeans, Singapore must always come first. So there is not necessarily always an automatic alignment between Singapore and the PAP. We must therefore always have a backup team, if nothing else, to keep the first team on their toes.
There is an interesting analysis of how PAP is still able to get over 60% of the votes in this election despite the huge show of support in rallies.

One of the reasons why the Pappies win easily is that they have the advantage of ELECTORATE ENGINEERING."

Now is the time to review what went wrong and how to get more prepared for the next election.
Pertaining to this...
I am living in east side, Tampines GRC area, Tampines have progressed greatly, just visit Tampines town and you will see why.
Shame on you... Do you know who your MP is? That "Shortie Horse". Where the $$ from the upgradings come from? I tell you... From the Singapore People in general not from the funds from the town council. I live in a PAP ward too, the walls are dirty and car park window is broken and I pay the same conservency fee??? What the shit!
Also, I still remember "Shortie Horse" once gave this explanation when he raised the conservency charge as a minister... To give us a better service... 3 years have passed, the walls is getting dirtier each day, pple throw rubblish on the floor takes 5 days to clear (which means, the bangra only sweep floor every 5 days???). What service have improved? Maybe only in Tampinese this is true, for the other PAP wards, NOT TRUE!!!
Lastly, your shortie minister horse also is the one that implemented the COE, talk cock about 2010 singapore in world cup and then say it is only an aim.... So many mistakes and yet claim 1million per year for salary. If a MNC CEO were to make so much mistake, he would have been sacked long ago.
and do you know how the short ass in tampines grc get into parliment? hide behind through grc.... not 1-1 fight with the opposition. does he dare to challenge CST in PP again? sure lose until pants drop.
The PAP of the previous years, from the beginnings of it, was great and it will have all of my respect.
But sadly, the new candidates forming the parliament is no where near them. Like you said, who can beat LKY? What if he's gone?
Do you mean to tell me that all the previous years of goodness will AUTOMATICALLY translate to future years of the same thing? Can't you see? THE PAP IS DEGENERATING.
Look at the dirty politics they play. Look at how much they are suppressing our views. Look at how they have nothing else to do than to use Upgrading to FORCE people to vote for them.
What is this? Is this a caring government? I dont want a government who can make billions for the country. I WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO CARE FOR ME!
Anyone read ST's Chua Lee Hoong article, 'The hurdles will only get higher'? I nearly choke on my own puke when i read it. Can we start dissecting ST's article, send it to all our friends and let them know how ridiculous their political sel-censorship/asslicking/propaganda (whatever you wanna call it) sound to the average singaporean. I can't take their crap anymore. I hope there will be no more election commentary after today. Peace!
Alternative Party over PAP anytime. and that's just for the latter's SHEER ARROGANCE alone.

Just to add to my comments about Tampinese just now... Just becos' that Shortie Mah is the MP, the playground for example have been renovated again and again, despite it being still very new. What is this? Wasting Tax payer's money? I know this becos' I visit my relative who is living there. Such allocation of resources and the gahmen still can say resources scare?
Also, I witness them dig the grass out and replant them (without any reason) not as if the grass are dying. If you really go and notice, they do this every financial closing, just to spend the excess budget before it goes to sinking fund and get stuck there. Is this the right way to spend out tax payer's money?
Go on and keep notice of these in your life and then judge for yourselve, is this gahment spending money wisely in the first place and is fair to ALL singaporean.

gomez is detained
There is this elderly WP member who spoke good teochew and cantonese, age about 70+, was with WP for 47 years. He really had charisma when speaking at the WP rallies. This elderly WP member should "train" the young rookies of AMK and prepare them for the next election. Just a thot. Can someone pass this thot to LTK?

LEGAL does not mean RIGHT,
RIGHT does not mean it is LEGAL.
Singapore is a country where someone or a group of people can set or intepret the law at will. There is no recourse for injustice.
As long as we have peace within ourselves and do what is MORALLY RIGHT. At the end of our lives, be in God, karma, Allah or whatever... They will be the judge.
I dont believe how there are still tampinesians who believe in their anchor MP Mah. For goodness gracious sake, his respond wrt the oppositions' victory was downright irrational, narrow-minded and reeks of spite.. an article in Today by Derrick Paulo, dated 7th May, quoted Mah as saying, " The people of Potong Pasir and Hougang have decided they want the incumbent MPs to be around and serve in whatever ways they've done and AREN'T INTERESTED TO HAVE THE UPGRADING THAT HAS BEEN OFFERED BY THE PAP MPs..so be it. That's the decision. The voters have spoken. We must respect that decision.." He obviously has a warped sense of reasoning if not pure misguided convicitons. The upgrading of lifts is a major issue brought up by all parties, PAP uses it as a carrot, Oppo. parties beg voters not to buy into it...however, upgrading IS NOT the only issue being debated... Mah makes it seem like the elections was merely a poll on whether the voters wanted to have upgrading or otherwise.. upgrading is NOT the only issue.. do not peg voters' choice on upgrading alone...that's stupid..this GE is about who the people believe are most suited to represent them in parliament. There are many factors of taken into considerations, the quality of the MP, the future of Singapore's political landscape and the type of leaders tht voters want to lead them into the future.
By merely dissing the voting patterns in Hougang and Potong Pasir as rejection by residents in these two wards for upgrading is childish and totally lacking in rationality. I wonder whether he really sees it as a punishment...punishment by the govt, especially him in his capacity as MND minister, dished unto the citizens of these two wards. I fear for the future of singapore's national landscape with a minister like this.
I can accept the argument that opposition wards should expect upgrading only later, after all the PAP wards..BUT THAT IS ONLY IF THE WARDS IN CONTENTION FOR UPGRADING ARE SIMILARLY RUN-DOWN, ceteris paribus ie all other conditions being equal...why in the world would a flat in a young PAP ward requires upgrading compared to an older and more dilapidated estate like Potong Pasir..obviously the benchmarks and conditions for upgrading are flawed...i also beseech Mah, for the good of his not-so-rosy nor bright political career, stop behaving in a high handed manner, ur logic and reasoning is flawed, and by making high handed statements like that, it reflects badly on your narrow minded personality too..sometimes is is best to keep one's gap tightly shut when one is emotional...like when one just lost something impt....ie two critical oppo wards...
to the govt, MND in particularly, show us the criteria for upgrading...do not simply give generic answers that state that oppos wards have to wait longer...how long...who is in the q? wards that have upgraded once, twice, three times over? cmon.... singaporeans are not morons...
in the good name of humour,
once, XXX Party was campaigning against the incumbent PPP Party anchored by a short Minister...during the campigning, height became a topic of debate, XXX, whose members all tower above 1.9m, argues tht short people's mangement skills lag in comparison against tall people....this was but one of many other more impt issues brought up by both parties....
XXX Party, riding the wave of popular disent and disapproval of the govt.....
During the post elections interview, short minister of PPP stated, "It is obvious that the people do not want a short MP, they have voted against me because I am short...."
let's wait for another hate campaign to run targeted at WP.
The PAP govt have said that they would spend $100 million for the lift upgrading at Hougang if they win that seat. Logically speaking, that same amount of money should be made available to Low Thia Khiang. The money that has been promised to the Hougang residents is not money coming out of the PAP's own pockets. Rather it is money from the Govt or more precisely taxpayers' money, i.e. your money and my money. So when they failed to win the Hougang seat, rightfully that money should be made available to Low Thia Khiang to use for lift upgrading in his constituency. To withhold that money just because they failed to unseat LTK tantamounts to political manipulation - to manipulate the Hougang residents into voting their candidate. So much for 1st world govt !!
What we have is 3rd world govt trying to fool the public that they are a 1st world govt using 3rd world political strategies supported by 3rd world propaganda
People of Singapore, will you not take up arms against the government and voice out your opinions? Do not keep to a blogspot which does yourself and the country no justice. Raise issues with your MP, form your own policy study group, question each and every policy that the government puts into place. Take up the challenge to challenge the ruling party. If you think you know better, go ahead, make your stand, do not be afraid. After all, you have so many people backing you from what I have read on this blog and many others.
But I caution calling for an outright street mob revolution against the PAP. That will work against all of us. Please know that we are a country without any resources except the human mind. If all our human minds were to revolt, you and your family will be out on the street in no time. Investments will flow out and we as a nation will sink. So with this 5 year window that you have before the next general election, take up the challenge and make your voices be heard. Question the government and interact with them to make things better for all.
If Singapore is so badly run, we do we have house and roof over our heads, have meal on our dining table ?
I think everyone should stay in overseas countries and look for yourself.
You are in a blessed country, yet you never treasure it.
