The PAP takes a Sledgehammer to Crack a Nut

SINGAPORE : James Gomez, the man at the centre of a controversy with the Elections Department over a minority candidate certificate, has been detained by police.

In a statement, police said they were investigating after receiving a complaint against Mr Gomez from the Elections Department.

Mr Gomez was stopped at Changi Airport on Sunday afternoon and prevented from leaving for Sweden.

Channel NewsAsia understands his passport and boarding pass have been confiscated.

Mr Gomez was taken to the Police Cantonment Complex at 4pm to have his statement taken.

During the hustings, Mr Gomez was embroiled in a controversy over his application for a minority candidate certificate.

He claimed to have submitted an application at the Elections Department, but security camera footage showed otherwise.

People's Action Party leaders later accused Mr Gomez of trying to discredit the Elections Department by claiming its staff had misplaced his form.

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng had charged that Mr Gomez stage-managed the entire episode from the start.

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew called Mr Gomez a liar, a charge he repeated on Sunday before police confirmed they had detained the Workers' Party candidate.

Said Mr Lee, "When I call a man openly, you're a liar, you're dishonest, and you do not dare to sue me, there's something basically wrong. And I will repeat it anywhere and you can't go and say, oh, I have apologised; let's move on. Can you commit a dishonourable -- maybe even one which is against the law -- an illegal act and say, let's move on because I've apologised? You may move on but you're going to move on out of politics in time."

Mr Lee said that whether other Workers' Party members connived at Mr Gomez's doings was a matter still to be determined.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was asked to comment on Mr Gomez's detention during his victory parade in Ang Mo Kio.

Mr Lee said he was not aware of what had happened, since the Elections Department filed a police report against Mr Gomez.

He said the matter was now in the hands of police.

At about 8pm, Workers' Party chairman Sylvia Lim and the party's defeated candidate in Ang Mo Kio GRC, Lee Wai Leng, were seen entering the police headquarters.

Will oppositions candidates starts disappearing one by one in the middle of their sleep like those happened in the 50s?

Dark days for Singapore History, maybe, just maybe one of the real reason why the birth rates in our beloved country has fallen so much be the fear of their children growing up in this Dark Days and have no real stake or future in this land of ours?

In first world country like Singapore, they don't disppear - they go to court and then the bank to withdraw $ to pay compensation. Intimidation. This is the expertise of Lee Kuan Yew now nicely executed by his son. Gomez and the others may not be charged, but this action alone may be enough to sent chills down the spine of the newbies who embarrassed the spineless PM in his own turf.

I hope my chidren will grow up in an environment of warmth, love, respect, a place to learn to forgive umpteem times. Not seeking out to fix, to vent, revenge...what kind of a evil and full of hatred society are we heading to?

I feel that it's just a matter of exercising the choice of individual rights. Perhaps he had the right to sue, but he chose not to sue cos it's too costly, troublesome and he wanted to carry on with his life and not be like those who sue here sue there...

Like I have the a choice to eat lunch today, but I decided to miss it cos I find it too troublesome to go downstairs, too lazy to queue for food. So I decided to move on and skip my lunch.

Is there anything wrong with that? Maybe there is... Maybe the food stall holder will sue me tonight... or worse still he will just report police and police will wait until i go on holiday den arrest me and make me lose all the $ i paid for the holiday.

To sue or not to sue. Sometimes at the core is whether u have the means especially when it's going to be protracted case. Can tahan financially or not ??

Based on this argument, very easy to for PAP or WP to choose new candidates in future. Just call them liar or criminals. If they sue you, then it means they are genuine, honest people and you can choose them. If they keep quiet, then must be guilty.

So why hold elections. Just randomly choose 1000 people of all races and gender. Call them names. Those who sue are the suitable ones. No need to waste money and time on the elections.

In this case, LKY can't see that sometimes gentlemen don't sue. They just ignore the shouting, or they refute your comments. Or sometimes they just don't have the resources to sue.

LKY thinks it's basically wrong to not sue because he thinks reputation is the most imp. But I daresay the rest of the population excepting PAP thinks otherwise.

The village had a great dog. It worked hard and kept all the sheep and cows in line for the farmers. In a few short years, the village prospered. However, as the dog grew bigger, its appetite got bigger, and soon it started to eat some of the sheep and cows. The pack was protective of their territory and would hunt down the new dogs and maul them to death.

As the years went by, the lead dog of the pack started to grow old. Its successor had not developed and grown fangs big enough to command fear from the villagers, as some of the villagers had started to taunt the successor dog. This angered the lead dog to no end, and soon it started to become rabid and lose its sanity. It would even bite villagers who had not angered it. Sometimes it even bit and killed dogs from its own pack.

Now the village was suffering. Due to the threat from the pack, they could not bring in new dogs to work for the villagers.They could only speak in hushed tones about the pack, for fear that their families would be eaten. Other villages did not want to trade with them.

Let's assume that after John Lopez has cleared the 'ter kwa' from his bar cho mee, he starts to eat it and then suddenly an old man appears. He is the owner of the stall. He then starts to cry father cry mother, calling John a liar and all sorts of unthinkable names. John seeing that he's an old man who can only finish 80% of his noodles, decides to just keep quiet and carry on eating his bar chor mee, minus the ter kwa. The rest of the patrons are also busy with their makan, trying to ignore this old man. But he is damned noisy.
At this stage, the friendly Sgt Dollah walks past. Who will the policeman ask to shut up? Old man or Lopez?
