The message on this poster reads:
The Vote Changes Nothing, The Struggle Continues. During the Paris uprising many activists concluded that reformist electoral politics were a dead-end. Demonstrations and strikes became the preferred forms of political action.
Art for a Change
Just in case anyone needs a translation, it says "The poll changes nothing. The fight continues."
u cannot seriously be advocating civil unrest? whatever the situation is in s'pore, it is nowhere near the dire state of things in paris in 1968. whatever you think might be achieved by such action, it is nowhere near the amount of damage it will do to ordinary s'poreans. just because a poster looks cool and arty doesn't mean that its ideals and message is appropriate for us.
Dear anonymous:
You clearly have no idea what the situation was in France in 1968 -- it was mostly students who were frustrated with underfunded and old-fashioned universities, and who were joined by workers and other mostly young employees who were sick of the paternalism and authoritarianism of de Gaulle's government.
Or, you have no idea of the dire state of things in Singapore. Opposition politicians are intimidated, served defamation suits, questioned by police, and even in the case of Chia Thye Poh, imprisoned for more than 30 years. We have a media which is completely biased and lacking in reliability and independence, laws which consign large numbers of people to misery which they don't deserve (think homosexuals, JWs and NS, mothers with disabled or dyslexic children, etc).
Believe me, compared to Singapore today, France in 1968 was a paradise.
pls spread this around......subcribe to WP newsletter to contribute to their funds for future elections. http://www.wp.org.sg/news/hammer_online/hammer_subscription.htm $20 will go a long way
Agreed. France in 1968 was a paradise when compared to Singapore from at least 35 if not more years ago. Chia (and others) were jailed with the same kind of trumped up charges and repressive measures even then. Things are no different today - it is the charade (ah yes, French word) that is smoother.
With the recent Singapore election, the beginning of the end for the 'ancien regime' is in sight. Even though students have not gone to the streets, the spark has lit a noticeable fire with the praiseworthy support for the opposition.
Oh, please. The WP and the SDA pose no real opposition to the PAP, and that is why they're being tolerated. The SDP and the political prisoners of the past have been made the scapegoat because they dared to truly 'oppose' the Lee system. They were the real 'opposition', and in fright, the government silenced them.
If the so-called 'support' the WP has garnered is your definition of a spark, you're solely mistaken. The PAP is smarter than that, I am afraid.
No wonder, they keep saying the WP and SDA provides no 'real opposition' to the PAP despite the 52 pages manifesto. Things are still same as they were before the election.
The 1968 uprising, the French intifada of last year, the Orange revolution, the Nepalese revolution, the Cedar revolution.. etc. They're all for us to take from.
Why didn't our opposition parties do what their thai counterparts did - simply refuse to take part at all? that would have saved all the problem and the whole world can laugh at familee.
Well, civil unrest is one thing. Rebellion is another, and truly seditious, so we don't want to jeopardise free speech by advocating violence, which can be genuinely interpreted as seditious.
However, peaceful demonstrations/strikes without a permit, being a fundamental right, could probably have an effect.
If we did what the Thais did, we would have lost 2 seats. The 2 seats will have been absorbed by the GRCs. People will still be too complacent to come out and march while the politicians on the opposing end are all locked up. Same as what Barisan Socialist did and end up with.
History should not repeat itself - Barisan Socialist was eliminated eventually becos' it failed to provide the people with the alternative voice (back in 1968 election i think).
What must be done is now to get back to basic and think of ways on how to overcome the media gridlock... You know what, today they start to show George Yeo attending meet the people session... See.. the bullees are already starting their next election campaign days after they have started. If WP wants to have a realistic chance come next election, they must start recruitment in every HDB block and Private estate to help spread the alternative news... Too few of the people knows how to blog. The news have to be translated and transcend down using the grassroot way. If not, we will never see this overcomed. Cos' media is controlled and majority impression is being incalcated. Overcome this, a GRC can be overcomed. To prevent the shifting of the election boundary. Target all HDB blocks in and around Aljunied GRC. Concentrate the firepower and set the ground work properly from now on. Good luck.
in the 1968 elections, lee siew choh of barisan socialis ordered all his other 13 member of parliment to boycott the elections, and this results in PxP sweeping all the seats in 1968. Lee Siew Choh was formally a PxP member but came out of the party to form Barisan Sosialis. We may wonder how come he suddenly wanted all his party member to boycott the election? He is said to be a fren of LKY. haha, think about it. Maybe can ask our parents who are in their late 50s or 60 onwards, they have been thru those times. hahah but your parents must be those who do see the true colours of the PxP one lah, no point asking those who blindly supporting the PxP.
I agree with the idea of withdrawing opposition from the politics.
Let PAP dominate. We just wait and see how much longer can Singaporeans take it and feel, enough is enough.
Let them cry out for opposition.
There is no other way to drastically change the political scene in spore unless to make Singaporeans help themselves.
Currently we have substandard opposition thanks to the WP and SDA, and yet, people are still voting for and blidly accepting the PAP. Do you seriously think that without a opposition party, Singaporeans will see the light and realize that the PAP is robbing them blind? I doubt it. Singaporeans have become too oblivious, partly thanks to our world class press!
