Lets Get Angry!

Don't let this happen to our citizens again!

Listen to this article Listen to this article

If Mr. Lee Hsien Loong can have a slip of tongue regarding his intentions to 'fix' the Opposition MPs and 'buy' votes, which by the way is a bigger mistake especially during a General Election, but is able to let his Press Secretary make a public apology for him.

Yet, when it comes to Mr. James Gomez who has apologized most sincerely over his absent-mindedness, the PAP is undertaking criminal charges against him.

This is the hyprocrisy we're living through. It's not so much a huge deal when members of the PAP make 'mistakes', Mr. Lee Kuan Yew is able to forgive them. Yet, when it comes to everyone else out of that special loop, the Singapore citizens, we get charged, sued and humiliated in the media!

This is an outrage. This is not the workings of a 'first world government'.

The Opposition Parties must now all rush down to the police station, if they are not already there drinking coffee. Why? To make a police report againnst the 'fix' statement. If Gomez was making fun of the election process, then BG Lee was _________ with the constitution and violating a tenet of Democracy (the presence of opposition in parliament). In the pledge we say "...to build a democratic society based on justice and equality..." So to the suay judge who have to administer this case,_______________

Your title is appropriate...we should not let such matter happen again in Singapore...but what's the action plan? What do you propose us to do? would anyone from non-WP come out and mobilise supporters?

and, can citizens file police reports against LHL's "mistakes"?

If any of us here still has a shred of conscience, we SHOULD do something for the Workers' Party.

This is really NO FUCKING joke, if this really goes thru(e.g JG and WP leaders all sued/detained/jailed for whatever fuck reason), then we are REALLY telling the ruling Govt that they ARE free to do whatever they want because every Singaporean is AFRAID to stand up even for a man who tried to STAND UP for the rights of his Singapore comrades!

What is Singapore really turning into!?

Shouldn't the Elections Department also be investigating a statement by a candidate that he buys votes? They are required to report that to the police as well.
As a citizen, I demand a public resolution of this serious incident.

By alert of any of the following:

    1. Violation of Human Rights
    2. Obstruction of Democracy

The United Nations(UN) will hold trial for all involved parties suspected of the above and tried as criminals, regardless of political standing within the country.

    http://www.un.org/english/

If we try, we can all email to the UN to seek for a just trial for the arrest of JG, LTK + WP including a thorough investigation of the election department and its procedures.

The majority of Singaporeans has given a robust mandate for PAP. Thus, PAP can do whatever they wish. We cannot blame them for eliminating the opposition parties. We have to respect what a wise choice the majority has made.

    2. obstruction of democracy?

let's see. the media refused to cover the opposition rallies. when they did talk about the opposition members, they used bad ligting, weird angles and made them look like hooligans. the media continued to report using such terms as 'deputy minster', 'prime minister' when the government was dissolved. the pap changed the rules before and during the election campaign: changed from dr. chee can't give public speeches to, he can't even talk to his supports at the rallies. the two lees continued to attack james gomez and the wp despite a public apology, and declared that if mr. gomez is not withdrawn, they'll take criminal charges. mr. lee said he was going to 'fix' opposition mps and buy 'votes'..

    etc
    etc
    etc

i think all these qualify as 'obstruction to democracy'!

    'obstruction to democracy'

PM Lee's speech on how he needs to fix the opposition and buying votes, including how he conveniently can NOT know the actions taken by the Election Department SUFFICES as an obstruction to Democracy.

Even if you are UNABLE to get him on democracy obstruction, he will definitely get his ass burned for his treatment of JG and WP leaders under the UN Human Rights Act.

    Go do your homework.

Please, stop harping on the elections. This is about James Gomez and his detention. We do believe this is an excellent move: let's start a petition.

Anyone willing to spend some time crafting one? Singapore Election Watch will most definitely post it up and spread the word. It's time we do something for the people who have taken the hits for the betterment of our society. Indeed, it's time to let the PAP know what we really think of them officially.

cc your email to Low Thia Khiang if you wish.
    ltk@wp.org.sg

    You can email this:

    Dear Sir,

I congratulate you for doing well in this election. However, we believe that you wanted to create an open and consultative society where every Singaporean matters. I also believe your education minister when he said in April for youths and Singaporeans to speak up and call for changes. We ask you to release James Gomez immediately and allow him his basic freedom of speech and movement as granted under the Singapore constitution. No matter what he did, you recieve your mandate from the people. I look forward to your reply. Thanks.

    Best Regards,

"COURAGE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF FEAR. IT IS THE WILL TO ACT IN SPITE OF IT." - Quote by Mr LTK

Does LTK and the WP have the courage now to act and stand behind Gomez? Or will they sacrifice Gomez for political expediency?

First they came for JBJ and you didn't speak up.
Then they came for Tang Liang Hong and you didn't speak up.
Then they came for Dr Chee and you didn't speak up.
Next they came for Gomez and still you didn't speak up.
Then they come for me but by then there is no one left to speak up.

I hope to clarify something. The police report was lodged by the Elections Department, and it had nothing to do with the PAP. The Elections Department had lodged a police report on grounds of criminal intimidation, and the police will have to act on all reports.

I hope you write responsibly as a blogger, and not tarnish our names as the fourth estate. Do let the facts come before flaming. I may not support the PAP, but I believe in proper recourse of the law, especially if Gomez did act improper to the Election officials.

  69. Anonymous Anonymous

And you're certain the Election 'Department' in is independent of our government? Hell, we don't even have an independent judiciary!

  70. Anonymous Anonymous

Why did the Elections Department waited till after the polls to file this complaint?

  71. Blogger John Riemann Soong

Lets see this rationally here. I really prioritise blogger freedom, but some of this is geting rather irrational. In any case current proposals for a petition/re-election, or hell, revolution is out of the question.

What we can do however, is to let other Singaporean citizens see this for what this is: an unethical and immoral move on behalf of the PAP.

    ivan:

Ah! You're right, but the slippery part comes in the fact that the Elections Department comes under the Prime Minister's Office. We don't know if PAP has a hand in this, but it is indeed fishy as it follows a trend seen in past elections (though this time by a different "party"). I'd say we look at how things progress first, before making our conclusions.

To those who are alleging that certain posts are spreading fear(I understand that to mean causing/influencing another to feel afraid), you have a serious problem.

I believe most are honest self expressions with no intention whatsoever to generate fear.

If you feel afraid/intimidated reading postings from here, do yourself a favor and stop reading.

Perhaps you are suggesting that the average dude reading the posts can be and will be influenced/ affected by what's written by another because they lacked the facaulties to judge and think for themselves? Or are you suggesting that this forum does not want to hear expressions of personal thoughts because it may mislead others and cause fear?

Hm....very paternalistic...perhaps you would like to advise and ellaborate on guildlines? What can be said and what can't?

ISD does not come after ordinary Singaporeans....please define extraordinary Singaporeans.

If everyone thinks like you, perhaps the Singaporean society is indeed not ready for freedom of expressions.

  79. Anonymous Anonymous

As posted previously, the election department should be make an independent entity... it appears that the goverment knows the voting patterns and I am not surprise esp the GRC are designed to have these outcomes (49% at most for any GRC). And why should I think so? Look at how we are directed to individual boxes at the polling centres, these boxes can divide the voters into blocks/age/etc... that are statistically important to them.

Since voting patterns will not change much and ppl dont move house that often, for example they can group those areas that previously supported them 80% into a GRC. Even there is a swing, there is at least a 30% margin of safety. No surprise how the GRCs boundaries are drawn to facilitate that.

I think the election department should be make independent

Election is over and done. What can we do... now that PAP has come into power once again.

With Singaporeans having short memory, it's no surprise that PAP is now out to destroy Workers' Party before the next election. And when it finally come, with Progress Package, Singapaoreans happily deposit their money and vote for PAP again. And everyone will forget about Gomez issue.

Everyone has forgotten about NKF saga, Tharman's big mistake but remember Steve Chia's unforgiven mistake. Singaporeans are so forgiven on big issue but unforgiven on small issue. Where our yellow ribbons!!

Just let all Singaporeans rot to hell. Singaporeans are indeed very stupid!!

"fix" has a nasty/bad connotation, threatening/intimidating too which one normally hears in movies depicting gangsters, triad. If a head of state can apologise n pardon himself , why can't the grand old man be more magnimous n let to rest..After all u n yr men had admonished, ridiculed and rebuked Gomez for this saga whether he's guilty or innocent. By the way can PAP stop all this name calling -Wayang Party /condescending attitude. it's repulsive/distasteful. Learn from LTK !

Up to last Sun -i never had any doubt who I was going to vote for. But then came along the JGgate. My curiosity was piqued seeing the force with which PAP topguns were gunning for JG relentlessly. That got me intrigued. Intrigue soon changed to distaste and disbelief at seeing the leaders getting petty. The rest is history. You can guess who I would have voted for.

To be fair, I also pity the elections department staff. If the thing goes to court, the elections staff have to describe how they lost sleep, had nightmares, lost confidence etc due to JG intimidating them with the "consequences".

In future, the elections dept should send all their staff for counselling and courses to prepare them for candidates who are out to intimindate them. Maybe also learn self-defence skills. Wah, didn't know working in elections department worse then working at MRT station. MRT station got so many people passing and KPKB but no reported intimidation that are publicised widely. I think we should have a petition to increase the elections department salary. Else, who want to work there.

A case of a First World Economy governed by a self proclaimed 'First World Government' resorting to Third World political means. Guess what...they were voted in by a sorry bunch of gutless Singaporeans on 6 May 2006.

    Can the http://multimedia.asiaone.com.sg/
actually broadcast telephone conversations without permission of Jaems Gomez or even recording it without telling him?
I think the "evidence" however light it may be, is not admissible in court. Is it?

In this case, James Gomez set an example and apologised himself without calling his assistant to do it for him. That is setting good example for others to follow. Shouldnt our leaders be a good example for our students to follow. If we keep badgering about mistakes we make about lying and forgetting to do things, how can we progress in life? Isnt forgive and forget something everyone should have. Dont treat people like they are perfect cause nobody is.

An American tourist was visiting a temple in Singapore when he noticed two statues of a man and a woman by the altar.

He asked the monk what was the significance of the two. The monk explained that in the Chinese system of yin and yang, positives must always be balanced by negatives, and having the two statues ensured that the universal balance was maintained.

"This statue of the woman is the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan-Yin."

"What about the other one?" asked the tourist.

In a hushed voice, the monk said, "This one is the God of No Mercy, Kuan-Yew."

    to blogger 9:31AM: Why???

Do not agree that communist countries will execute JG or anyone so easily as the blogger is suggesting. The communist will let you go if you sign a "self-criticism" letter acknowlging your mistakes and willing to go for re-education (brain-washing)and don't get involve in opposition politic again. But not in Singapore, it is a very vicious system. Sorry is not enough. It is worst than outright execution because that will make martyr out of that individual. It is a slow and painful, bankrupt you financially, socially, etc. all in the name of integrity and high standard. What is the motive for doing this? You and me know. This is why I do not agree with those who sincerely joint pap and hope to change things from being inside. Fat hope as long as MM is alive which I believe is reason why so many leave after first term. Those who stayed will ultimately be mould to be like him. They will talk about "passion" and "survival" for the country but short on "compassion" and "feeling" for the people. To be honest, pap lost this election if you minus the votes of the "fearfuls" whereas practicall all votes for opps are solid support votes.

"... sorry? sorry oso muz exprain! ... "

  112. Anonymous Anonymous

we can perhaps minus all the fearful vote by trying to get a figure of the civil servants who get to vote this time round...
just a suggestion =) does anyone has the figures?

  113. Anonymous Anonymous

Such figures are hard to get as many will disavow any knowledge or admittance of voting for theopposition. I know there are many closet WP sympatizers. Being in the civil service myself, I'd say it'll probably be around 1 of 3. :)

Dr Goh's case is too sensitive to be discussed. Serious!

He is in Shanghai, perhaps might be living in another area now!

  115. Anonymous unknown

Since Dr Goh's case is sensitive, is there a blog or article in oversea that I can read as I am not station in Singapore.

The abuse of the word "communist" is rather misconceptuous, because totalitarianism or the Soviet structure is not necessarily equated with all communist-favoured administrations (ie. especially the libertarian communists or the anarchist communists).

Besides, isn't the Communist Party of India a major opposition party anyway?

The key here is that it is probably no better than the democracy existing in the United States during the era of Tammany Hall.

  119. Anonymous Anonymous

why is the PM so high class? that he cannot do a sincere apology himself?

  120. Anonymous Anonymous

"whats new. JBJ, CSJ, Francis Seow, Tang Liang Hong and now James Gomez. the shit thing is this is the most ridiculous one to date"

one more to add.... the malay WP candiate, Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood for Eunos, remember the phrase 'korang hajar'? that was a close call too!
